The Salem witchcraft trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts. These trials took place between February 1692 and May 1693, and resulted in the executions of 20 people, mostly women. The outbreak of witchcraft accusations began in the small village of Salem, when several young girls claimed to be possessed by evil spirits. They accused others in the village of practicing witchcraft and causing their afflictions. The accusations quickly spread, and soon more than 150 people were arrested and imprisoned. The trials were characterized by mass hysteria and a climate of fear.
