The Witches of Macbeth: Analyzing their Historical Context

By admin

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share with you all this amazing video I came across on the history of witchcraft. It's truly fascinating how deep-rooted the belief in witches has been throughout history. The video starts by diving into ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and their practices of magic and sorcery. It then moves on to the Middle Ages, a time when witchcraft was perceived as a threat to society and countless innocent people were accused of practicing it. This period is known for the infamous witch trials that took place in Europe and North America, resulting in the execution of many individuals. As the video progresses, it explores the Salem witch trials in detail, shedding light on the hysteria and fear that gripped the community during that time.

Our fuzzy mascots have also been running the Impact Earth booth at the South wedge farmers market in Rochester. Here, not only have they been helping to sell Impact Earth’s zero waste lifestyle products, they have also launched many new educational programs, activities and games to help educate and entertain market patrons. This market has also been a great place to test run new characters, like Blizzard the Arctic Wolf.

Our various mascots made appearances all across Monroe County and beyond to help spread the message about the dangers of plastic pollution and what alternatives to plastic products are available. Fittingly, we are test running some activities featuring young animals learning life skills as they prepare for adulthood, much like human children do at their schools.

As the video progresses, it explores the Salem witch trials in detail, shedding light on the hysteria and fear that gripped the community during that time. The documentary also delves into the psychological and societal factors behind the belief in witches, including the role of misogyny and persecution of marginalized groups. One of the most intriguing aspects of this video is how it portrays the shift in perspective over time.

Seven Years with Howler and Swift!

In 2008, the foundations of ROC Animal School were set. I had done a few events at the Genesee Country Village & Museum and Braddock Bay Raptor research as talking mascots, presenting some sort of educational content. Of course, back then, we were using traditional styled mascots with big padded suits and oversized heads. Not surprisingly, our audience had a hard time hearing us.

Flash forward to early September, 2015. I found myself with nothing to do one day so I stopped by the local costume shop in the mall in hopes of finding some supplies for programs. The shop was setting up their Halloween stock so a lot of new stuff had just been put on the shelves. Two of these items happened to be a wolf and a fox mask. They had caught my eye from quite a distance away because they were extraordinarily realistic. I actually looked at them for quite some time just because they looked so strikingly different from anything else that was on display. It was pointed out to me that these masks had a moving jaw that supposedly would work as you spoke while wearing the mask. I tried on the wolf first and bought it on the spot.

I remember being so amazed by this. I realized right away that finally I could do a program and actually be heard by the audience clearly. The moving jaw was certainly a bonus as it would add a bit of realism to the character. I went back to the costume shop the very next day and purchased the fox mask.

I created two programs soon after this: one on wolves, the other on foxes. I still use these two programs to this day.

It’s astounding that, here we are, 7 years after that day and I’m still using the original masks I purchased. They’ve held up really well despite extensive use. ROC Animal School wouldn’t be the same without these two canines (Howler Wolf and Swift the Red Fox).

I’ve lost count how many programs and events Howler Wolf and Swift the Fox have been a part of over the last seven years. We’ve traveled a lot of miles with these characters with some events requiring a six hour stint in costume or longer in 90°+ weather. I did it all in the hopes of bringing wildlife and nature education to the masses and making it fun.

It was because of Howler Wolf that I got a job at impact earth. I was tabling at a farmers market while wearing the suit and I ran into Robert Putney, the founder, and We began to talk. I started working with him not long after that. Impact Earth’s mission clicked instantly with me. It has been amazing to watch the company grow since those early days. Now, Impact Earth helps compost food scraps in three different counties, sells a massive variety of zero waste lifestyle products, offers a variety of educational programs and is making New York State a much better place to live.

This past July, a lot of us at Impact Earth took part in the Seneca Park Zoo’s Jungle Jog 5k. The event raises funds for nature and wildlife conservation and research. Fittingly, I wore the wolf suit and walked the entire route in it. For a wolf, conservation is a huge deal. With wolf populations slowly rebounding in some states while being nonexistent in others, their future depends on conservation efforts, continued study and research. It goes without saying that Howler Wolf takes this pretty seriously. If I’m able, I’d like to make this an annual event for Howler to take part in.

In closing, Happy Birthday to Howler Wolf and Swift the Red Fox. ROC Animal School wouldn’t be the same without you!
