To substitute a witch In ancient times, the belief in witches and their dark powers was prevalent among many cultures. Witches were often seen as bringers of misfortune and were feared by the general population. Many societies had rituals and practices aimed at appeasing or warding off witches. One such practice was the idea of substituting a witch. It was believed that by finding a suitable replacement, a person could avoid being the victim of a witch's curse or spell. This idea was particularly common in cases where someone fell ill or experienced a stroke of bad luck, as it was believed that these misfortunes were caused by malicious witchcraft.

Now, to be fair, Biller sends mixed messages. She claims LOVE WITCH is really a post-modernist update of Film Noir and Douglas Sirk's style glossy melodramas. Yet, her soundtrack is full of 60s Ennio Morricone type giallo and psychedelic lounge music - not the more old school Herrmann,Alfred Newman 40s and 50s style of scoring. And, all the nudity and explicit sexuality is much more 60s/70s exploitation than 50s MGM technicolor weepie. It's an odd combo. All of that is fine, if the film worked. Unfortunately, it becomes tedious long before the 120 minute end mark. Exacting attention to detail, a few clever feminist touches and some nice upending of clichés only go so far. And, the acting is so affected that you can't help but think it's parody (again, Biller says that was not her intent). The biggest drawback is Samantha Robinson in the lead. She is trying for a very tricky stylized throwback tone, but, she simply isn't a good enough actress to pull it off. She just comes off as stiff and stilted (you actually have to be a very good actor to pull off being so stylized in your performance). You have to believe that, in the end, Robinson was chosen more for her physical charms than for her acting ability (something Biller indirectly admitted to). It's also odd that such an underground effort still hews to mainstream cinema's tendency to have the 'stars' manage to remain partially clothed while the nameless background artists go full frontal nude (including a very noticeable breast pastie).

Like I said, the movie has all the feel of a period piece, but there just isn t much there, and after a while the viewer may become as bored as I did. There s a deliberate cheesiness, or cheesiness, in the way the characters look, and the aforementioned stiffness extends not only to the way the actors speak but how they hold themselves.

The Love Witch

Spesso mi sono trovato a criticare film che puntano tutto sull'estetica, ma con "The Love Witch" mi tocca fare un'eccezione. Il film è talmente bello a livello visivo, con i suoi colori rutilanti e le scenografie squisitamente 60's, da farmi sorvolare su una sceneggiatura non esattamente esaltante (ma comunque funzionale). In particolare la bellezza di Elaine, la protagonista, è ai limiti dell'incredibile, roba che a fine film mi è venuto mal di testa, come se veramente mi fosse stato lanciato un incantesimo. La pellicola ha un evidente messaggio femminista sul quale non sono interessato a soffermarmi particolarmente, portato avanti comunque in maniera divertente e per niente stucchevole, mentre lo spettatore è totalmente ammaliato dalle luci, i colori, le chincaglierie dell'appartamento di Elaine, ed ovviamente, da Elaine stessa: magnetica, deliziosamente in modalità overacting, con la sua parlata da usignolo. Non le ho contate tutte, ma se non vado errato, mi sono innamorato della protagonista circa 127 volte. Ciò stabilisce un nuovo record e dubito verrà battuto in futuro. Alla fine mi è piaciuto "The Love Witch"? Sì, decisamente.

Anna Biller's sophomore feature film is much more successful at being entertaining. Samantha Robinson is a lot of fun in the titular role, who makes men fall in love with her so much that they would literally die to be with her. Colourful campy fun, though still on the overlong side.

When the movie ended I thought it was a very "feminine" movie without knowing the director was a female.

There are lots of inconsistencies regarding character morals but since movie reveals it's satiric nature in the first minutes, all become deniable. I do hope their take on witchraft and satanism is also satirical as it contains many misconceptions yet alone wrong portrayals. It is obvious that there is not much research involved in this so it better be watched with this in mind.

Only artistic value this one has to offer is it provides an insight to female nature. So expect to see lots of nipples, polygamy and irrationality.

This is cool from a design and visual staindpoint. It has a very retro feel to it and the characters dress and look like they're out of the late 60s or early 70s with their hair styles, cars, clothes, and even the way they talk and interact. You can tell this movie is trying to pay homage to that time period and it sort of works. Outside of that though I didn't care for this movie, it's about a witch who uses sex and hypnotism to lure men to her and get them to fall in love with her and eventually obsess over her which leads to their death. Meanwhile you got a detective investigating her and trying to figure out the murders. She belongs to a cult of witches and her goal is to find a perfect husband who doesn't obsess over.

I guess Samantha Robinson is very attractive in this and she sort of ends up being eye candy for most of this since the movie mostly consists of her seductively tempting guys and having sex/sexy dancing, I mean there is an extra on the DVD of Robinson basically doing a seductive strip tease style dance for her audition. But really I get that the movie is trying to make the case that women can have power over men with their sexuality and it sort of alludes to the witch trials and women being punished in the past for their sexuality instead of embraced, and it tries to make the case that women can take down even the most powerful men with this power. But really, I didn't get much from the plot. Elaine ends up just dumping most of the men and she just seems kind of weird and odd, like she just is floating around and doesn't know what she wants or have any real motives. I guess it's supposed to be a comedy/parody, but I still wish the plot had more substance other than it mainly being Elaine doing odd things and flaunting her sexuality, I mean I get it, Robinson is really attractive and her 60s look in this adds a charm and elegance to her on top of her already being attractive, but I wish she had more depth to her character. The cult stuff even feels a bit like an afterthought and really doesn't go anywhere. Its a cool looking movie and I love the aesthetic and Robinson does a convincing job and just oozes sexuality and seductiveness that put most women to shame, but outside of those things I just felt the plot and direction of the movie didn't say much and it felt more like a movie that ended up going nowhere in the end and even the comedy was kind of hit or miss.

First of all I must admit that it took me two attempts to actually get through this movie. Not because this was a bad movie, don't get me wrong. The first time I made it some 25 minutes into it before I had to leave it, as my wife wasn't impressed with what was transpiring on the screen. So I returned to the movie some two weeks later by myself, because I thought that the movie definitely deserved a chance, because I was entertained by what I had seen so far back then during the first round.

In some cases, the substitute would be deemed unworthy or unable to handle the powers they had inherited. This could lead to dire consequences for both the substitute and the person they were supposed to protect. Despite its questionable efficacy, the idea of substituting a witch was rooted in the deep-seated fears and superstitions of ancient societies. It served as a way to shift the blame for misfortune onto someone else and bring a sense of control and security to a world fraught with unknown dangers..
