You really can’t find a weak link defensively across this Magic roster. If you want to nitpick, then sure, nobody is perfect. But top to bottom, there’s at least one thing – and in most cases two or three things – each Orlando player does well on the defensive end.
Interesting, too, is that each of the Magic’s guards are good defensively. That’s very rare, as most teams have at least one backcourt player, if not two or even three, that are unable to hold their own in various defensive situations. Many struggle to fend off the big boys in the paint, for example, which, as Shaquille O’Neal likes to say, is a “barbecue chicken alert.”
Markelle Fultz, Jalen Suggs, Gary Harris, Cole Anthony, and Anthony Black are all above-average defenders – based both on eye test examination and advanced analytics. Meanwhile, most of the Magic’s frontcourt players can switch on the perimeter if necessary. Even those that don’t do that at a high level – like Moe Wagner and Goga Bitadze – make a big impact with their hustle plays. Also, every rookie that has ever averaged the kind of numbers that he did last year went on to become a multi-time NBA All-Star. Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but he’s made of the right stuff.
The Magic won 12 more games last season than the prior year. Banchero’s stellar play as a rookie had a lot to do with that team improvement. So, just putting two and two together, when star players play well and steadily improve, their teams also tend to get better.

Let’s use the 2023 FIBA World Cup as an example. For the first time in its history, Germany won hoops gold in a global tournament. This was a group, which included the Wagner brothers, that had been playing together for quite a while. That familiarity and trust helped them beat some of the other top teams, including the United States in the semifinals and Serbia in the championship game.
By bringing back nearly the same roster as last year – with the exceptions being Joe Ingles, who signed as a free agent over the summer, and the two 2023 lottery draft picks, Black and Jett Howard – the Magic should have similar chemistry that Germany had. Now obviously, other teams in the NBA have great chemistry, too – in addition to more experience. But this group in Orlando has bought in to head coach Jamahl Mosley and his staff’s winning principles and attitude – just as Germany’s squad bought in to that program’s approach.
Their Depth Should Be A Strength
The Magic are still very young. In fact, only the Pistons, Thunder and Trail Blazers are collectively younger than Orlando (as of now). Despite that, the Magic are quite a deep team. There are going to be guys coming off this bench that you might wonder at times if they deserve to start, especially if Black and/or Howard do well right out of the gate. If everyone is healthy, meanwhile, we could see guys who have started before – like Jonathan Isaac – make a huge difference in second-unit roles.
The Eastern Conference Is In An Interesting Place
Especially after the Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday trades this past week, Milwaukee and Boston appear to be the cream of the crop in the East. That can certainly change as the season goes on, but for both, anything short of a trip to the Finals would be a pretty big disappointment.
After those two powerhouse squads, there’s some uncertainty. The Cavs should take another step, especially after addressing their need for more shooting by signing Max Strus and Georges Niang over the summer in free agency. The Sixers, even though we don’t know what’s going to happen with James Harden and his well-publicized trade request, should still be a threat, assuming reigning league MVP Joel Embiid is his normal self. The Knicks, led by Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson, were a pleasant surprise last year. The Heat are always a tough out in the postseason, proven again last season when they reached the Finals after nearly missing the playoffs.
There are a few teams, including the Magic, who have been building through the draft the last few years that seem poised to make a major jump in the standings this season. Don’t be surprised if very few East teams are out of the playoff mix before late March.

I am extremely disappointed with the Pagan Calendar Wheel 20022. The quality of the materials used is subpar, and the calendar itself is poorly designed. The images and illustrations are pixelated and lack detail, making it difficult to appreciate the beauty of the artwork. Additionally, the printed text is barely readable as the font is too small and cramped.

The information provided on each month's section feels haphazardly organized and hard to locate. Additionally, the size of the calendar is quite small, making it challenging to read the dates and notes without straining my eyes.
