After reading books 5-6 his manipulation becomes so transparent in every panel he's shown in book 4, especially after they enter the "void" for the "test." Kazu's story writing back then was so good that I didn't know Max was a traitor when I first read it 😭. Max was a tier 5 manipulator in the void, every word he said linked to what he was actually planning to do like oh my god how did I not realize any sooner when I first read the book?
Eg; When Aly asked why the "stone keeper" used dead people to create the illusions and Vigo's robot explained why, she says, ". Whoever is creating these illusions must not care very much for other people." and the scene cuts right to Max- like damn 💀. Re-reading older books with the knowledge of the current books impresses me so much, because Kazu had everything planned out, then book 6 comes and BOOM. Everything we thought we knew goes down the drain. It's sad to live with the knowledge that the newer books will never keep up to the older ones.
TLDR; Max is a tier 5 manipulator, Kazu fucked up the story
