Destination marketing organizations (DMOs) are constantly showing off their creativity when it comes to marketing campaigns that stand out and in some cases, shock travelers into thinking, “I just have to see that for myself.” Who wouldn’t be curious why a destination that has its own OnlyFans? Here are four crazy — spooky, honest, four-legged, and risqué — marketing ideas that worked.

Dark Tourism Thrives in Salem, Massachusetts

Millions of tourists visit some of the most gruesome places on Earth every year—including sites of atrocities, accidents, natural disasters, and death. The term “dark tourism” refers to visiting infamous locations of some of the darkest events in human history to experience them firsthand.

Creepy, right? But spooky sells … just ask Destination Salem. Travelers motivated by dark tourism can learn the history of Salem, find modern-day witchy wonders to visit, and add famous attractions to their bucket lists.

“Nebraska. Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”

Talk about self-deprecating humor! Visit Nebraska recently won a 2022 Mercury award at ESTO for its marketing campaign, “Nebraska. Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”

The campaign plays on the idea that some travelers don’t even consider Nebraska when choosing a vacation destination. The goal was to single out those willing to find out what makes the state “appealing, charming, and disarming.”

Website traffic has been up 43% since the campaign was unveiled at the 2018 Nebraska Tourism Conference. The DMO continues to promote the campaign by using #HonestlyNE on social media and selling merch that features the brutally honest slogan.

Recently, the campaign won the award for best Integrated Marketing and Messaging Campaign: State Marketing Budget Less than $10 million.

OnlyFans Displays Vienna’s Explicit Art

Admit it. You only made it this far in the article because “OnlyFans” caught your eye. We get it, and so does Vienna Tourist Board.

In 2021, the DMO launched a rather creative and brilliantly controversial campaign that involved the adult content platform. The team created an OnlyFans account under the name @viennatouristboard to promote the city’s famed artwork while evading censorship.

The DMO faced roadblocks when popular social media platforms began blocking its content if it featured risqué pieces of historic artwork. By using OnlyFans, the destination was able to avoid content restrictions, posting the original masterpieces for visitors to experience in the flesh (pun intended).

“We started our OnlyFans account to protest the rampant censorship of explicit art by social media algorithms,” stated Vienna’s OnlyFans profile. “Although the problem is by no means solved, we like to believe that we helped spark a global discussion.”

Access to Vienna Tourist Board’s OnlyFans, which is usually paid by a subscription fee, is free for all users, giving art lovers the opportunity to enjoy Viennese art as intended by the artists.

The case was tried in 1692 in Jurgensburg, Livonia, an area east of the Baltic Sea steeped in werewolf lore, and involved an 80-year-old man named Thiess.

Theiss freely confessed to being a werewolf. He testified that his nose had been broken by a man named Skeistan, a witch who was dead at the time he struck Thiess. His story of how it happened was this: Skeistan and other witches prevented crops from growing by carrying seed grain into hell. Thiess was a werewolf, who, with other werewolves, attempted to protect the crops by descending into hell and fighting with the witches to recover what was stolen. Three times a year, on the nights of St. Lucia, Pentecost and St. John (seasonal changes), the battles took place. If the werewolves delayed their descent, the witches barred the gates of hell, and the crops and livestock, even the fish catch, suffered. The werewolves carried iron bars as weapons, and the witches carried broom handles. Skeistan had broken Thiess' nose with a broom handle wrapped in a horse's tail.

The judges, naturally, were shocked to hear that werewolves, who were supposed to be agents of the Devil, could not tolerate the Devil and fought against witches.

Asked what happened to werewolves at death, Thiess replied that they were buried like ordinary folk, and their souls went to heaven--another shock for the judges. Thiess insisted that the werewolves were the "hounds of God" who served mankind, preventing the Devil from carrying off the abundance of the earth. If not for them, everyone would suffer. He said werewolves in Germany and Russia likewise fought the witches in their own hells.

Thiess refused to confess that he had signed a pact with the Devil, despite the efforts of the judges. Even the parish priest, summoned to chastise him for his evil ways, failed to sway Thiess. The old man angrily said he was a better man than the priest and that he was neither the first, nor would be the last, werewolf to fight the witches.

The judges sentenced him to 10 lashes for acts of idolatry and superstitious beliefs.

I struggled to connect with any of them, and found myself not caring about their fates. Overall, it just fell flat for me and I wouldn't recommend it.

It felt like the author was trying to be clever and mysterious, but it just came across as convoluted and pointless. I also found the writing style to be dry and uninspiring. I had high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, it did not deliver at all.

- Emily - 2/5 stars - I had high expectations for "Could this be magic", but it turned out to be a letdown. The pacing was incredibly slow and it took forever for anything interesting to happen. I also didn't find the characters to be compelling or relatable. It's a shame because the concept had potential, but the execution fell flat.
