On ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” NFL fans are not just being treated to a Super Bowl LVII rematch between the Chiefs and Eagles and a showdown between the best quarterbacks in the game, they are also getting a close-up taste of Kansas City’s mascot at Arrowhead Stadium.
What is it, you ask? The Chiefs’ mascot is “KC Wolf,” which was “born” in 1989.
“His 85-inch hips, size 23 shoes and relentless personality are unmistakable,” the Chiefs’ website says. “He’s a fixture both on and off the field for generations of fans, representing a brief escape from reality that only a larger-than-life persona can provide.”
KC Wolf replaced Warpaint, a horse that was retired in 2021 “after years of pressure from Native American groups on sports teams with discussions of racist names, offensive iconography and cultural appropriation,” according to The New York Times. From 1963-71 when the Chiefs played at Municipal Stadium, Warpaint was a horse ridden by a man in a headdress, according to The Kansas City Star. A cheerleader rode it in the years after.
KC Wolf is unique because he’s used for more than just rallying fans at Arrowhead Stadium. He is also a “humorous and motivational speaker,” and portrayed by Dan Meers, who makes 150 speaking engagements a year, per the Chiefs. Meers started his career as a mascot at Mizzou when he became “Trueman the TIger” and a gig with the St. Louis Cardinals in college as “Fred Bird.”
“My occupation is a mascot – I pay my bills running around in a costume – but my preoccupation and what I’m truly passionate about are my faith, my family and using my life to make a positive impact in this world that I live in. That’s what I try and focus on each and every day.”
One day, while exploring the fields, Silvester stumbles upon a shiny red pebble. Not knowing it possesses magical powers, he takes it home as a curious souvenir. During a thunderstorm, Silvester makes a wish using the pebble to become a rock to avoid getting wet.
