Why Bella Ramsey left her role on The Worst Witch with fans rushing to support the Leicester actress

Leicestershire's Bella Ramsey is now known for starring in the likes of Game of Thrones, Hilda and most recently the blockbuster TV adaption of The Last of Us. But for a generation the performer is always going to be remembered for a lead role in The Worst Witch as Mildred Hubble.

However, the star stepped down from the role after three series, which started when she was just 14. The decision was a surprise to fans, but one that the starlet took herself.

Ramsey started acting as a hobby at the age of four with the Loughborough branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts and soon landed roles after attending the Television Workshop. One of the first of which was the lead character in The Worst Witch, a CBBC, ZDF and Netflix co-production.

However, just three years into her role on the show, Bella shocked fans by leaving the beloved show. Announcing her departure from the role, Bella wrote on Instagram: "Forever grateful for my time as Mildred in The Worst Witch. but there is a time for everything under the sun. And I decided last year, before series four started filming, that it was my time to say goodbye to Mildred."

"Thank you fans for all your support, thank you to the crew over the three years, thank you to all the residents of Cackles Academy, thank you to Jill Murphy for this wonderful world you created. It was completely my decision to say goodbye for reasons I can't really go into but to everyone reading this, please prioritise your mental health and do what's right for you."

Bella's statement was met with a outpouring of well wishes from fans. Greenscreengal44 on Instagram wrote: "I just got to season 4 and I was crushed as you are the reason I watch the show! I'm so proud of you for putting mental health first.

"All should learn to do the same. Our vibrational energy needs to be first priority."

Another viewer wrote: "I am truly sorry that you left Cackles Academy but fully understand your need for doing so.. I wish you the very best that life has to offer."

Where are The Worst Witch cast now? Oscar and soap stars and shocking makeovers

The Worst Witch was one of the best children's TV shows of the late 90s, but where are the cast now?

Mildred Hubble, her pals and rival and Ethel Hallow provided us with years of magical entertainment from 1998 until 2001.

Their adventures as students at Cackle's Academy were based on the books written by children's author Jill Murphy.

While one has become an Oscar-nominated actress, others quit acting and went down other career paths.

Let's take a gander at where they're up to now..

Mildred Hubble (Georgina Sherrington)

She grown up! Mildred Hubble (Georgina Sherrington)

Mildred was the main character in the programme and found it a little tricky getting to grips with flying a broomstick.

The actress Georgina lost the plaits and went on to star in kid's TV show Weirdsister College - the sequel to The Worst Witch.

After the series finished she went on to attend Princeton University (so she's smarter than her character in real life) and now works as a consultant business coordinator for BBC comedy.

Drusilla Paddock (Holly Rivers)

Drusilla Paddock (Holly Rivers)

Holly played awkward Drusilla in the show but has now left acting and works as a fashion blogger.

She underwent the biggest transformation from the show and looks VERY different in this pic of her in rather bright attire.

The punk princess is probably not recognised for her role in The Worst Witch these days.

Maud Moonshine (Emma Brown)

Maud Moonshine (Emma Brown)

Emma played adorable Maud Moonshine in The Worst Witch and was one of our favourites.

You can still tell it's her in this photograph, even though she's all grown up and lost the specs.

Emma quit acting after her role and is now married with two children but we imagine she looks back fondly at her time on the show.

Ethel Hallow (Felicity Jones)

Ethel Hallow (Felicity Jones)

Felicity has been very successful and was recently nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

She's also due to star in the new Star Wars film - not bad for the former school bully!

The actress was just 11 when she landed the role of Ethel and said she's tired of being an 'up and coming' star after 20 years in the business.

Enid Nightshade (Jessica Fox)

Enid Nightshade (Jessica Fox)

Hollyoaks' fans might never have realised that Jessica Fox, who plays long-standing character Nancy Osborne, is the same girl who starred as Enid Nightshade.

Enid was always playing jokes on the students and she still has the same fringe, sort of.

Jessica has been in Hollyoaks since 2005 and is a popular character in the Channel 4 soap.

The worst witch actress

Mildred Hubble, the protagonist of the Worst Witch has been Georgina#s first part ever - and she made a great job of it.

She even won the Young Artist Award (see below). You can also read an interview with Georgie beneath the Artist note.

WW is currently running in the fourth season - even though there might be no sequel, I think she should and will keep up acting. =)

No schooluniform - tsktsktsk - what would HB say? Yet: Cacklish colours =)

WORST WITCH" ACTRESS WINS MAJOR AWARD
Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter books (and their younger siblings), the four original WORST WITCH novels by Jill Murphy are now repackaged with exciting TV-tie-in covers.

Georgina Sherrington, who plays lead character Mildred Hubble in the WORST WITCH series on HBO, has just won the equivalent of an Oscar for her performance. Sherrington received the Young Artist Award for Best Performance for a Leading Young Actress in a TV Comedy Series. Other Young Artist Award winners this year include Thora Birch of "American Beauty," and Haley Joel Osment of "The Sixth Sense." For a full list of winners, visit http://www.youngartistawards.org/ .

Georgina Sherrington, star of The Worst Witch, tells Jamie Woolley all about hubble, bubble, toil and trouble.

Mildred Hubble is back. The troubled student of Cackles Academy for young witches returns in a new series of The Worst Witch for more problem potions and mis-firing spells.
Playing the part of Mildred is 15 year old Georgina Sherrington who got her lucky break through a drama workshop she used to attend.
"The Worst Witch is my first experience of professional acting," she says, "but I first became interested in acting when I was about seven. I had a friend who wanted to be an actress and I used to go to drama workshops with her.
"The producers of The Worst Witch came along to our workshop to choose people to go to auditions, and I got chosen. I had to do three auditions in total, but in the end I got the part."
Since then she's filmed three series of The Worst Witch, but watching yourself on TV can be a bit weird and Georgina agrees. "Usually I'm thinking to myself, 'why have I pulled that face?'
"And a couple of times there have been scenes where we couldn't stop laughing for some reason and although I'm sure the audience wouldn't notice it, I can see myself getting ready to giggle!"
That's something that actors dread - laughing during the middle of a take. Georgina admits that there are plenty of things which set her off, especially if she gets her lines wrong or something else goes wrong. if I've shared a joke with someone off-set, and I catch their eye whilst you're supposed to be filming, that can set me off."

To make all the spells and magic come to life, special effects are used by the bucket load including the broom-flying sequences. This is done by a process called green-screening, where the actors are filmed in front of a green backdrop which can then be replaced by computer with a new background and hey presto, you've got a witch in flight on her broomstick!
But even special effects don't always go smoothly. "Jessica Fox, who plays Enid Nightshade, and I fell off our broomstick when we were filming the first series. Jessica ended hanging upside down and I did a backwards somersault, but we did have a mattress to land on safely."
Despite being only 15, Georgina has already won an award for her acting. She got an Annual Young Artist award for her part in The Worst Witch and went to all the way to Hollywood to collect it!"It was fantastic, absolutely amazing. We only went for a weekend, but we saw all the sights before going to the awards ceremony. I also saw loads of celebrities like Melissa Joan Hart, who plays Sabrina, and her sister, as well as several people from Boy Meets World."
And although The Worst Witch books by Jill Murphy were published over 20 years ago, Georgina says that the other more recent trainee sorcerer, Harry Potter, nearly stole one of her fellow actors from the series.
"Kate Duchene, who plays Miss Hardbroom, was offered an audition for a very similar role in the Harry Potter movie. But she said she felt that she should be loyal to The Worst Witch so she didn't go!"

Pagan feasts in 2023

Many pagans gather to watch the sunrise, perform rituals, and partake in outdoor activities to embrace the energy and warmth that the sun brings. Samhain, observed on October 31st, is yet another important feast in 2023. Samhain, also known as Halloween, is a time when the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds is believed to be at its thinnest. Pagan communities come together to honor their ancestors, communicate with the spirit realm, and celebrate the cycle of life and death. Furthermore, Yule, celebrated on December 21st, marks the winter solstice. It is a time of introspection and renewal as pagans welcome the return of the sun and the lengthening of daylight. Yule festivities often include lighting candles, decorating evergreen trees, and exchanging gifts to symbolize hope and new beginnings. Each of these pagan feasts carries its own unique customs and rituals, but they all share a common thread – the acknowledgement and reverence for the natural world. These celebrations provide an opportunity to disconnect from the fast pace of modern life and reconnect with the earth and its seasonal rhythms. They serve as a reminder of the deep-rooted connection between humanity and nature and offer a chance to express gratitude for the beauty and abundance that surrounds us. So, in 2023, let us come together to celebrate these ancient traditions and embrace the magic and wisdom they impart..
