I work in AK for the Federal government. Black Magics are what we are issued for our 870s for bear protection for field work. I have great faith in them.

I no longer live around grizzly, as I once did. The worse thing I could run into now is a Black Bear. When I lived and scouted for Mule deer and Elk in the off season in Wyoming south of Yellowstone I carried a .44 Magnum 51/2" Ruger Redhawk loaded with Randy Garrett 330 grain Hammerheads. I also did a lot of praying for my safety. Being young and stupid back then I spent way to much time out there by myself. I spent some time talking to author James Gary Shelton due to a friend's death due to bear attack and read all of his excellent books on bear attacks and bear attack survival. I can not recommend his works highly enough. He is a gentleman and a true scholar in every respect!

The black magics sure work well on whitetail deer. Minimal meat damage and pokes a 1” hole through organs.

I just got a batch of the Magnum Crush (paid to much!) for the Benelli Slug Gun. I would to try on my 3rd Brownie or Moose one day..or a Wyoming Bison?
I have custom slugs by Greg Sappington that "crushed" the completion at the Linebaugh Seminar years back. 880s and 1043s hard cast at 1440fps and 1080fps.
Now thats real Horspower!!
Another SERIOUS load is the Tri Ball 3" Magnums. 3)600 grain 60caliber hardcast balls that will group less than 8" at 40 yds when choked properly

New Brenneke Slug

Well I was fishing around for trajectory information on the KO Slug and Black Magic Mag I saw the "NEW" tag by a new name! It is reported for Rifled Barrels only but It looks like the same construct as the Black Magic Mag and is not in a plastic sleeve as most Sabot's are.. I am in process of contacting Brenneke on why they say "Rifled Only" but picture a basic Foster style Slug. EITHER WAY

I believe this is the heaviest 12ga slug available: Correct me if I'm Wrong:

1-1/2 Ounces (666 grains)
3" shell

Yea that certainly looks like it would work just fine in smooth bore barrels. I would be interested to hear what they have to say about it. I agree I think this is one of the heaviest 3" slugs available.

I know there are heavier 3-1/2 (10ga) slugs but I don't know if their are any heavier 12ga slugs. CTD carries a "Heavy Shot" branded 3" slug that is 1-1/2 ounces but idk what they claim the grain size is.

I also asked about their Frangible slugs they have out. Questioned whether or not they are just LE availible

Dang! I'd like to try it out!

It does say rifled barrel only, but would like to know why.

Still awaiting a reply from Brenneke USA. Once I get a reply I will certainly pass on the info! I am also awaiting a reply from SEE ALL Open Sight company manager for a T&E session with their little device! They were GREAT CS the first go around for information, hoping for a great one this time and possibly no money outta my pocket unless I keep it

A 3" 1-1/2 ounce slug?

Can I watch one of you guys shoot it first?

Itsricmo

If they tell me that they are capable of being fired from a smooth bore with a decent result to be expected, I will gladly buy a box or two and record it for your enjoyment

This is what I have gotten in reply from a Brenneke USA rep:

I will see if I can answer your questions comparing our 3 inch Black Magic 1 3/8 oz with our new 1 1/2 oz Magnum Crush. It is somewhat confusing so bare with me.

Brenneke USA has in the past offered two 1 3/8 oz 3 inch slugs - - the Black Magic and the Gold Magnum. Both slugs have the same ballistics. However, the Gold Magnum was designed for rifle barrels only and the Black Magic was designed for both smooth or rifle barrels and any choke.

First I have to point out the purpose for the ribs on Brenneke slugs. The ribs are there only to allow the slug to pass through the constricted areas, the forcing cone in front of the chamber, the inside bore, and the choke. As the slug passes through these cionstriucted areas the ribs compress and keep the slug in its original shape for better down range accuracy and penetration. With the Black Magic, the ribs go in the traditional direction and can be used in either a rifle or smooth barrel and any choke - - improved cylinder, modified, or full choke. However, the more open the choke the better the accuracy. Competitive slugs are not recommended by them to be used in a smooth barrel with any choke other then improved cylinder.

The Gold Magnum was designed for rifle barrels only. The ribs on the outside of the Gold Magnum go in the opposite direction to grasp the rifling for somewhat better accuracy. The ribs on the Gold Magnum are more rigid and do not completely compress as the traditional ribs do on our other slugs. Therefore, it is necessary to have only a cylinder choke or open choke with no constriction. Most rifle barrels do not have any choke. This is the reason the Gold Magnum is recommended for rifle barrels only. If you have a smooth barrel shotgun you could use the Gold Magnum if it has an open choke which is unusual for a smooth barrel. You can see how difficult it is to explain this to the average hunter - - so Brenneke chooses the best way as "for rifle barrels only".

Now back to the new 3 inch, 1 1/2 oz Magnum Crush and your question. Brenneke designed the new Magnum Crush, a very hard hitting slug with both deep penetration and accuracy using the same opposite direction ribs as the Gold Magnum. There was no reason to continue with the Gold Magnum and the Magnum Crush replaces it. If you have an open choke with no constriction you can use it in your smooth barrel. Without the rifling in the barrel it may not be as accurate? I am attaching one of our current catalogs and on page 15 you can read about the ribs on the Brenneke slugs and their purpose as I have pointed out above.

I am not familiar with Brenneke having a frangible slug. If you want to let me know which slug you are referring to maybe I can somehow help you?

Hope this helps - -

Charlie Hays, Brenneke USA

EDIT: The frangible slugs are manufactured by Ddupleks not Brenneke. haha my bad fellas! Here goes another email!

Brenneke slugs and bears?

Picked up a 500a this weekend and my mind started to wander. Brenneke are supposed to be the medicine for bears. Any experience 50 yards and closer in a defense situation? Specifically looking at the Green Lightening for a 12 gauge.
I'm not trying to start a debate on shotgun, rifle, pistol, spray. The weather was crappy yesterday and I got bored and started to think about this. Links to documentation would be great. Thanks.

The Brenneke greens are what ADF&G settled on for bear protection for crews, and for killing problem bears.

That’s interesting. I assumed it would one of the more potent offerings. Do you have a link to the study? If there was one? Thank you.

None that I'm aware of.

Just went off the manufacturers specs as compared to others. Brenneke makes a load or two that are even more stout, but with a fair bit more recoil. Staff that carry them are a broad spectrum of sizes and experience, and that was a consideration.

I was looking at the green because of the recoil. I noticed they had a load that was around 3800 ft. lbs. but I bet it would be a pretty wild ride with a short barreled 12. I’ve never been in a bear fight, but I would think multiple shots on target at a lower energy would be better than one miss. Thanks again.

@Mattahall15. I would have to agree with that. I point a shotgun a lot better than a pistol for sure.

ADFG did an extensive bear control near a village a few years back. Shooting from a heli, they killed 80+ in a few days. black and grizzly. Many of the bears were recovered for villagers to process meat. Villagers complained that the Brenneke slugs ruined too much meat. When the shooter switched to the old Foster slugs, it took more shots to down the bear but they could "eat right up to the hole". IIRC, they did another shoot the next year, with similar results, and moose numbers rebounded.

Review: I had high hopes for the Missha magic cushion but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The shade 21 was too light for my skin tone and made me look washed out. Additionally, the coverage was very minimal and didn't cover up my blemishes and redness well. The cushion also felt quite heavy and cakey on my face, which was not a pleasant feeling. Overall, I was disappointed with this product and will not be repurchasing it.

Review: I really wanted to like the Missha magic cushion, but it just didn't work for me. The shade 21 was too yellow-toned for my skin and looked very unnatural. The coverage was also quite patchy and didn't hide my imperfections. I also found that the product didn't last very long on my face and started to break apart after just a few hours. I would not recommend this cushion to anyone looking for good coverage and a natural finish.

Review: I was excited to try the Missha magic cushion after hearing good things about it, but it unfortunately didn't work well for me. The shade 21 was too pale for my medium skin tone and gave me a ghostly appearance. The cushion also emphasized dry patches on my skin and made them look even more noticeable. Additionally, the product didn't have great staying power and would rub off easily. Overall, I was disappointed with the results and would not purchase this cushion again.

Review: The Missha magic cushion was just okay for me. While the shade 21 matched my fair skin tone, I found that it didn't provide enough coverage for my acne scars and redness. I had to layer the product multiple times to achieve the desired coverage, which made it feel heavy on my skin. The cushion also felt quite sticky and didn't set well, making it prone to transfer. Although it had a nice dewy finish, I think there are better options out there for the price.
