ORLANDO After watching the Miami Heat have their way for two games, Penny Hardaway decided he wasn’t going to let the Orlando Magic bow out of this Eastern Conference playoff series without a fight.

Last night Hardaway put on a brilliant display, literally taking the Magic on his back and carrying them to a 99-91 victory over the Heat in front of 17,248 frantic fans at Orlando Arena. Hardaway put together a 48-minute, 41-point game that left Pat Riley wondering what he was going to do come Sunday when the two teams play a pivotal Game 5 at Miami Arena.
Tuesday night, Hardaway led Orlando to an 88-75 victory in Game 3 with 42 points.
The winner of this series, now tied 2-2, will play the Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
“It was one of those things where I got into a rhythm again real early,” said Hardaway, who scored 27 points in the first half. “As long as I make shots early, that sets the tempo and opens things up.
”
Hardaway scored 26 points in the first half of Orlando’s Game 3 win.
“We all know he’s a star in this league, but he has demonstrated the last two games that he’s going to be one great superstar in this league,” Orlando coach Richie Adubato said. “I gave him a break the other day; he played 47 minutes. I couldn’t give him one minute today.
”
Derek Strong added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Magic, who also got another solid performance from Darrell Armstrong, who came off the bench to add 12 points and nine rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
Gerald Wilkins chipped in 11 points off the bench and Danny Schayes added 10 for Orlando.
“There is an old saying that the playoffs don’t start until the home team loses a game,” Riley said afterward. “That’s what it has come down to. We had an opportunity to close it out, but we ran into a very committed basketball team that we are going to have to deal with.
”

J. Brown added 20 and Jamal Mashburn scored 19. Tim Hardaway also scored 16 points for the Heat, who were so bewildered by Penny Hardaway’s dominance that only three players spoke to the media after the game, and only one of them was a starter Brown.
“We’re just not playing Miami Heat basketball,” Brown said. “Our defense sucks right now. We let one guy take over the game, and that’s not us.
Hardaway started right where he left off in Game 3, shooting 9-of-16 from the field in the first half, including 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point line, to lead the Magic to a 53-39 halftime lead.
“Penny is our Michael Jordan,” Wilkins said. “He can do it for us and we need him to play like that. He can go out there and get us 30, 40 or even 50. He’s like that and he’s playing like a superstar. This is the playoffs and superstars are supposed to take over.

Similar to Game 3, Orlando ran its offense through their 6-7 guard the entire game, letting Hardaway set up down low or start from the top of the key.
Miami tried to double-team him early in the game, but after Penny knocked down a couple of shots, Riley abandoned the tactic and decided to play him straight up for the rest of the game.
“All season long, we prided ourselves on playing people straight up and down,” Riley said. “But obviously he has been absolutely brilliant thus far.
“He came out on fire in the first quarter and that’s a decision we’re going to have to make, how much do you want to break down your defense to stop him? We’re going to have to analyze that.
