James Beshara’s life has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. After spending 13 years building companies such as Tilt, investing in companies such as Gusto, Halo Top, ThirdLove, and RigUp, Beshara’s journey transformed him into the ultimate biohacker, resulting in his latest company: Magic Mind. “What impacted me most is when the doctor asked how much caffeine I was consuming on a regular basis. When I told him I drink around 7 coffees a day, the doctor advised that stress and caffeine consumption can contribute to heart disorders such as atrial fibrillation,” says Beshara. Beshara was told he would need to restrict his caffeine consumption to 80mg or half a cup of coffee a day. “Once I checked the box of, I’m not going to die from this heart condition, I asked myself, how the heck am I going to operate a 50+ person company for more than 15 hours a day with only half a cup of coffee?” says Beshara. When Beshara’s doctor asked if he had ever tried green tea, which contains a compound called L-Theanine, Beshara’s biohacking journey began.

Beshara spent the next 6 months figuring out how to make 80mg of caffeine last him as long as possible throughout the day. After solving the problem for himself, he found that many entrepreneurs, operators, and early-stage investors were also facing a tremendous amount of stress and were depending on caffeine for productivity. His ambition of solving a personal problem quickly expanded to solving a much broader one for the industry. “I never drank coffee until I started building companies after graduating from Wake Forest University. In fact, I did not even really understand what stress was until I started my first company,” says Beshara. When applying to Y-Combinator for Tilt in 2012, Beshara recalled staying up all night consuming 3 Red Bulls. Over-caffeinating became an unhealthy lifestyle he depended on for productivity. This continued until his trip to the emergency room. At the time, he had no idea his journey would lead him to Magic Mind.
Beshara's Book: Beyond Coffee
Beshara’s entrepreneurial path transformed substantially from the time he founded Tilt in 2012 and the company was acquihired by AirBnB in 2017. Building Magic Mind versus building Tilt were polar opposite experiences for Beshara. “With Tilt, I remember sitting on a couch in Austin before relocating the company to San Francisco, thinking what’s the biggest idea I can develop around a social network for money. With Magic Mind, it started as a side passion to solve a problem I was experiencing personally,” says Beshara. Over the next 7 years, Beshara tested hundreds of different formulas to get the most out of caffeine for a healthy morning drink. In fact, he quickly became known as the residential expert in nootropics among many in Silicon Valley. It became such a passion that his blogging on nootropics became an Amazon bestselling book in health & nutrition published in Fall 2019 with expert co-authors, Dan Engle, MD and Katherine Haynes, MPAS, PA-C, entitled ‘Beyond Coffee’.

Beshara personally visited several locations to ensure maximum quality and to build direct relationships with the producer of his key ingredients. Each of the ingredients are shipped directly to a production facility in Upstate, New York where it is manufactured through an assembly line process. The boxing and packaging is manufactured in Utah and shipped to New York. “I wanted to go with small square bottles because of the resemblance of old vintage medicine bottles. It turns out there’s a reason all beverage bottles are round — the production equipment is built around round bottles, so by choosing square, we set ourselves up for new challenges with just about every aspect of bottling,” says Beshara. Ultimately, the team found a manufacturing partner willing to take on the Magic Mind project. This New York based manufacturer not only handles filling and labeling but also fulfillment. By finding a manufacturing partner vertically integrated across several areas of the value-chain, Magic Mind is able to provide its product to consumers at a better cost while ensuring optimal freshness and quality directly from the manufacturer.

Many have turned to Twitter and Instagram to sing their Magic Mind praises. The company built an organic following of more than 11,000 fans on Instagram, including several of Silicon Valley’s top investors, entrepreneurs and operators. Justin Kan and Kevin Rose are among these enthusiasts. In fact, after trying the drink, they reached out to Beshara to invest. “Before Magic Mind, I was a big coffee drinker but I switched to only decaf. Before trying Magic Mind, I was already looking for something different than coffee since it makes me too jittery and I can’t sleep well after one cup. After trying Magic Mind, I felt more focused,” says Kan. There is only about one meeting per week at Magic Mind. Beshara runs the company asynchronously. He built a company culture that reflects his desired mission for improved focus, less stress, and prolonged energy.
