The app uses your location to determine which posts you can see.

At each stop, “The Yak” (their mascot) would interact with the students at these campuses. “The Yak” would take selfies with them, play games and of course, encourage students to check out and continue to post to Yik Yak.

The Yak mascot created a bridge connecting consumers with the seemingly-lifeless app through a fun and thought-provoking method. With the app being built around its anonymity, the mascot brings something tangible and interactive for consumers to connect with. This is experiential marketing at its finest, people.

This interaction sparked massive bursts of content in other media channels, namely Twitter and Instagram. Students love seeing this anonymous application come to life and want to share their excitement with others. The app even has it’s own Twitter account, @theyak, that tweets on behalf of the mascot. This account is essentially an informal form of PR for Yik Yak, as well as a source of information for “The Yak’s” whereabouts.

The key takeaway from this experiment performed by Yik Yak is experiential marketing can be the spark to extremely potent content campaigns. Yik Yak has spawned a Twitter account with almost 10,000 followers; with thousands more retweets and mentions being sent throughout the web. Everyone who was physically involved in creating the tweets got to experience “The Yak” and (most likely) had a positive experience. Those who have only seen the elusive “Yak” online now have a desire to get the chance to see him in person. Yik Yak has made it clear that “The Yak” comes to places with large “herds”, therefore this Yik Yak user will want to promote Yik Yak around his campus. It’s a win-win for both Yik Yak and it’s user base.

So taking this all into consideration, why haven’t Twitter or Snapchat done anything like this? Twitter’s mascot may not be quite as easily created into a real-life entity, but Snapchat’s “Ghost” is recognized by hundreds of millions of people. It’s growth has been insane; doing something tangible and shareable like the Yak Bus Tour (or even just a one-time visit to a well-populated area) will help the application to the forefront of people’s thoughts.
