The magic library is a place filled with wonder and imagination. It is a sanctuary for those who seek knowledge and adventure. When you step into the library, you are transported to a world where books come alive and the stories within them become real. The magic library is much more than just a collection of books. It is a place where imagination takes flight and ideas flow freely. The walls are lined with shelves upon shelves of books, each containing a different world waiting to be explored.

Put the mixture in the fridge for 20 minutes to firm up.

I may mention the names of stores and or brand names of products that I use because readers ask and I share products and sources which I use and think may be helpful to readers, all opinions are my own. I have an enamel coated cast iron wok and it is quite fussy to take care of as it is but boiling water in it would definity ruin the wok s seasoned finish.

The walls are lined with shelves upon shelves of books, each containing a different world waiting to be explored. The air is filled with the scent of old parchment and ink, creating an atmosphere of intrigue and mystery. As you wander through the labyrinth of books, you can feel the stories calling to you.

A la Carte: ‘The Runaway Wok’ for kids

From hungry ghosts to “boy dumplings,” Chinese food, culture and folk tales have always appealed to Lafayette author Ying Compestine, whose young adult novel about China’s Cultural Revolution, “Revolution Is Not a Dinner Party,” won 19 major literary awards. Now the Chinese-born author is back in bookstores with a picture book for kids, “The Runaway Wok” (Dutton’s Children’s Books, 32 pp., $16.99). It’s a Chinese take on an old Danish folk story, with a distinctly Robin Hood-like air.

“Always around Chinese New Year, I miss my home,” Compestine says. “It’s the biggest holiday growing up.”

This rollicking tale of a magical wok, a poor family and an unexpectedly splendid Chinese New Year celebration includes colorful illustrations by Barcelona artist Sebastia Serra and a recipe for Festive Stir-Fried Rice. No talking woks required — but plenty of delicious ingredients and a dash of symbolism, too. Compestine’s grandmother always said the dish’s many components promoted happy relationships between siblings.

“You have all the many ingredients going together,” Compestine says. “My grandmother always told me and my brothers to eat it, so (we’d) get along well. My idea is, after kids finish reading the story, they can cook with their parents.”

Festive Stir-Fried Rice

2 green onions, minced

3 tablespoons olive oil, divided

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1½ cups edamame or peas

1 medium yellow or red bell pepper, seeded,

3 cups cooked rice

3 tablespoons dried cranberries or raisins

3 tablespoons soy sauce

2 teaspoons sesame oil

3 tablespoons toasted pine nuts or other nuts

1. Beat eggs, green onions and salt in a medium bowl. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a nonstick wok; swirl to coat pan. Add egg mixture; swirl to evenly cover bottom. Cook, without stirring, 30-40 seconds or until eggs are firm and brown on bottom. Flip and brown other side. Cut eggs into small pieces with spatula. Remove from pan.

2. Heat remaining oil in same pan. Add garlic; stir-fry until fragrant, 30 seconds.

3. Add edamame; cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Add bell pepper; stir fry 1 minute more. Add rice, cranberries and soy sauce; stir fry until hot.

4. Return eggs to pan; mix well. Garnish with sesame oil and toasted nuts. Serve hot.

When you go to any yum cha restaurant, there are some dim sum dishes that are a MUST. If I had to choose (and, boy, is this hard!), Ham Sui Gok, Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce, Black Bean Pork Spare Ribs and Mango Pancakes would be my all time favorites.
