Cultivating Fear: The Propagation of Folklore and Superstition during the German Witch Trials

By admin

The Witch purge in Germany refers to a period of intense persecution and execution of individuals accused of witchcraft, mainly women, in various regions of Germany between the 15th and 18th centuries. This wave of hysteria and fear was part of the larger European witch-hunt craze that spanned from the late medieval period to the early modern era. The witch purge in Germany was marked by widespread accusations, trials, and executions. It is estimated that tens of thousands of people, mostly women but also some men, were accused of practicing witchcraft and subsequently put to death. The reasons behind these accusations varied, but commonly included alleged supernatural abilities, alleged alliances with the devil, and elements of prejudice against marginalized groups, such as poor women, widows, and elderly individuals. The trials of accused witches in Germany were often conducted in a manner that heavily favored conviction.

The trials of accused witches in Germany were often conducted in a manner that heavily favored conviction. Torture was commonly used to extract confessions, and the legal system often relied on superstitious and unfounded evidence, such as spectral evidence or witness testimonies obtained through coercion. During these trials, accused witches faced harsh treatment, including physical torture and psychological manipulation.

"Charlie Chan in Black Magic" übernimmt erneut das Erfolgsrezept, das Krimi- mit dem Horrorgenre zu vermischen - diesmal werden tödliche Séancen abgehalten und Menschen in einen hypnoseähnlichen Zustand versetzt. Trotz interessanter Zutaten zieht sich der Film sehr, bis es zu einem trickreichen Final kommt.

. or Charlie Chan in Meeting at Midnight. The meeting is a seance and the plot involves hypnotism, blackmail and (literal) skullduggery. An exciting sounding brew, am I right? Alas, the scripting prowess and production values of Monogram Chan movies make their presence felt and if a pulse is quickened by this, the viewer may already be a corpse. Time-passing but in no way essential.

Not a boring attempt at Charlie Chan mystery by Monogram, but they really tried too hard with this script making it spectacular with the clairvoyance angle. I love that they hired Frances Chan to play Frances Chan, the daughter of Charlie Chan. Her second time she played his daughter, as she did so 11 years earlier when she was a child too, which I found quite interesting, considering she didn't really have much of a movie career. Oh, and is it me, or does Sidney Toler give less and less effort with his character? Regardless, these Chan movies are still entertaining, even if handled by a smaller studio.

From Shoreline Entertainment & poverty row studio Monogram Pictures comes another Charlie Chan mystery starring Sidney Toler as Chan. Dated and not at all PC. Directed by Phil Rosen.

"Mr. Chan you sure did lose some weight"

One of the better Chan entries I've seen and Sidney Toller is in fine form. The hilarious Mantan Moreland gets more screen time than usual and that's a good thing. Lots of nasty Chan zingers in this one too. Daughter: "You know Pop, I got an idea about this Bonner case."
Chan: "Water on brain now leaking, huh?" Cop: "Chan, what about that bullet?"
Chan: "You can keep secret?"
Cop: "Of course."
Chan: "So can I." (leaves)

I want to attack Charlie Chan for how poorly he treats every single one of his children

Despite the welcome addition of Mantan Moreland, I didn't like this one as well as most of the others. Frankly, I didn't care for Frances Chan's acting.

Charlie Chan seems to like his daughter Frances better than his other children. You know what? I agree.

Charlie Chan talking to ghosts.

THE CHARLIE CHAN PROJECT #27 The twenty-seventh in my revisit to the Charlie Chan movies of the 1930s/1940s. Surely you've seen those murder mysteries in which the killer sets up some elaborate physical process to do in his victim while making it hard for the police to determine how the crime could have been committed. You know, the ones with a poison-dart gun rigged inside the grandfather clock, or the chandelier that falls when the victim plays a certain note on the piano? If you have, perhaps you've said to yourself, "Why didn't he just shoot him in a dark alley, instead of setting up something so complicated that dozens of things could go wrong?" Well, should that type of…

Just when I thought I was stuck at the bottom of the Chan film barrel, Black Magic comes along and reminds me what the good life is like. Seances, hypnosis, bullets made of frozen blood, Birmingham Brown. Black Magic has it all. I really liked the choice to not include Tommy, number 3 son, in this film. His role as sidekick sleuth is filled admirably by Frances, one of Charlie’s daughters. She is a sight for sore eyes, bringing a lightheartedness that was sorely missing with Tommy. There are some quite intense moments as well, the main one coming when Charlie is hypnotized and in peril. Black Magic is a Chan film winner; hopefully this bodes well for the Toler home stretch 78/100

Witch purge germany

The witch-hunt craze in Germany gradually waned by the early 18th century, largely due to the emergence of the Age of Enlightenment and the changing attitudes towards witchcraft and superstition. The Enlightenment thinkers, with their emphasis on reason and scientific inquiry, began to challenge the belief in witchcraft and questioned the legitimacy of the trials. This shift in mindset eventually led to the gradual decline of the witch-hunt phenomena. The witch purge in Germany was a dark and tragic period in history, characterized by mass hysteria, paranoia, and the loss of countless innocent lives. It serves as a stark reminder of how fear and superstition can lead to widespread persecution and injustice. The memory of the witch purge in Germany continues to be a topic of scholarly research and interest, as historians and sociologists seek to understand the underlying social, cultural, and religious factors that contributed to the persecution of alleged witches..

I couldn't even finish "Witch Purge Germany". The writing style was confusing and disjointed, making it hard to follow the narrative. The dialogue felt forced and unrealistic, and the descriptions were often overdone, bogging down the story. It was a struggle to stay engaged, and eventually, I gave up. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

While "Witch Purge Germany" had a unique concept, the execution fell short for me. The historical setting was intriguing, but I felt that the author didn't fully utilize it. The story lacked depth and failed to explore the complexities of the witch trials during that period. Additionally, the ending felt rushed and unresolved, leaving me unsatisfied. Overall, it had the potential to be a great book, but it didn't quite meet my expectations.
4. Matthew - 2/5
I found "Witch Purge Germany" to be predictable and clichéd. The storyline followed a familiar plotline without offering any surprises or originality. The characters were one-dimensional, and their decisions and actions felt forced. The pacing was also off, with the middle portion dragging on unnecessarily. Overall, I was unimpressed with the book and wouldn't recommend it to others who are looking for a fresh and captivating read.
5. Jessica - 2/5
I was initially drawn to "Witch Purge Germany" by the premise, but unfortunately, it didn't deliver. The writing style was bland, lacking descriptive language and emotional depth. The characters felt flat and uninteresting, and their motivations were often unclear. The plot itself felt disjointed and poorly executed, with several loose ends left unresolved. Overall, I was left feeling underwhelmed and unsatisfied with this book.
