Groundhog Day is a popular annual tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. It is believed to have its roots in ancient pagan celebrations and is closely tied to the changing seasons and the arrival of spring. The origins of Groundhog Day can be traced back to an ancient Celtic festival known as Imbolc, which marked the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Imbolc was dedicated to the Gaelic goddess Brigid and celebrated the coming of spring and the return of longer, warmer days. It was believed that on this day, the hibernating animals would awaken and the earth would begin to show signs of rejuvenation. With the spread of Christianity, efforts were made to incorporate pagan celebrations into the Christian calendar.

We originally intended for this to be a Halloween Squishable, but, well, here we are. Thank you! Unexpected! Anyway. here's a massive version! A full armfull of well-timed spookiness. Here's the description!
Medieval plague doctors thought the smelly herbs and flowers they stuffed in their masks would keep them healthy. They didn't. But their impenetrable (and spooky!) leather outfits actually did! That coat was like the hazmat suit of their day. Today we have soap, so unless you particularly like wearing a lot of leather, maybe just wash your hands instead. Actually, wash your hands either way. Now wash them again.
Please be aware, there may be some variation in the glow-in-the-dark color of the lantern!

Plague doctors had a mixed reputation, with some citizens seeing their presence as a warning to leave the area. Some plague doctors were said to charge patients and their families additional fees for special treatments or false cures. In many cases these doctors were not experienced physicians or surgeons; instead, being volunteers, second-rate doctors, or young doctors just starting a career. Plague doctors rarely cured patients; instead serving to record death tolls and the number of infected people for demographic purposes.

The plague doctor's main task, in addition to treating people suffering from the plague, was to compile public records of plague deaths. Plague doctors became witnesses to countless wills during plague epidemics and advised their patients on their conduct before death. This advice varied from patient to patient and, after the Middle Ages, the nature of the relationship between doctor and patient was governed by an increasingly complex code of ethics. Costume of the Plague Doctor A typical costume consists of an ankle-length coat and a beak mask, usually filled with a sweet or strongly scented substance (usually lavender), as well as gloves, boots, a wide-brimmed hat and an outer garment costume. A typical mask has glass openings for the eyes and a curved beak, shaped like a bird's beak, with straps to hold the beak in front of the doctor's nose. The mask has two small nostrils and is a breathing apparatus containing aromatic substances. The beak could hold dried flowers, herbs, camphor or vinegar sponges, as well as juniper berries, ambergris, cloves, laudanum, myrrh and storax. the purpose of the mask was to prevent the foul odour, known as miasma, which was thought to be the main cause of the disease. The doctors believed that these herbs could combat the 'stench' of the plague and prevent them from becoming infected. Wide-brimmed leather hats indicated their profession, and they used wooden canes to point out areas that needed attention and to examine patients without touching them. The cane was also used to keep people away and to undress without touching the victims of the plague. The history of the plague doctor According to Michel Tibayrenc's Encyclopaedia of Infectious Diseases, the iconic plague doctor was first mentioned in the written writings of Charles de Lorme, the royal physician then in the service of King Louis XIII of France, during the outbreak of the plague in Paris in 1619. After De Lorme, the German engraver Gerhart Altzenbach published a famous illustration in 1656 on which the publisher Paulus Fürst based his iconic Dr Schnabel von Romm. In this satirical work, Fürst describes how doctors do nothing but terrorise people and take money from the dead and dying. The plague doctor's costume is first mentioned by Charles de L'Orme, physician to King Louis XIII of France, who, writing about the 1619 plague outbreak in Paris, developed a costume made of Moroccan goat leather that included boots, breeches, a long coat, hat and gloves imitating a soldier's canvas robe from neck to ankle. The garment is impregnated with an aromatic substance similar to that of a mask. L'Orme writes that the mask had a "nose half a foot long, shaped like a beak, full of perfume, with only two holes, one on each side near the nostrils, but large enough to breathe and carry the impression that the air the man breathed was further enclosed in the beak by drugs".

With the spread of Christianity, efforts were made to incorporate pagan celebrations into the Christian calendar. Imbolc was transformed into the Christian feast day of Candlemas, which falls on February 2nd. Candlemas commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the temple and the purification of the Virgin Mary, and candles are typically blessed on this day.

The association of Groundhog Day with weather prediction can be traced back to German settlers in Pennsylvania who brought with them the tradition of "Candlemasen" or "Candlemas weather forecasting." According to this tradition, if the sun appeared on Candlemas Day, the hedgehog would see its shadow and retreat back to its burrow, indicating six more weeks of winter. This belief was later adapted to the groundhog when settlers arrived in North America, where the animal was more common. Today, thousands of people gather in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual Groundhog Day celebration. The star of the event is Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog who emerges from his burrow on February 2nd. According to tradition, if Phil sees his shadow, it is believed that there will be six more weeks of winter, while no shadow indicates an early spring. Groundhog Day is not considered a religious holiday, but it carries elements of ancient pagan traditions and folklore. It serves as a lighthearted and fun way to mark the changing seasons and bring communities together to celebrate the arrival of spring. Whether one believes in the weather prediction abilities of a groundhog or not, Groundhog Day continues to captivate the public's attention and remains a cherished tradition in many parts of North America..
