The process of sewing a magical curse can vary depending on the story or tradition it is associated with. Others portray the act of sewing itself as the curse, with the stitches representing the magic being woven into existence.

The time we 6-ironed my lucky charm goodbye before starting our shift

Last time I had a real hard emotional crash was in September 2003. It was the one my pirate friend helped me through.

It started a couple minutes before I had to Tears-of-a-Clown it to the few hundred gamblers racing up to my footsteps so me and my co-workers could take care of their cars. Normally, I’d have pockets of time away from the masses to deal with the agony in installments, but on that day I was covering for a supervisor during an event rush. All eyes on me that shift. The only moments I had to deal with it was the two minutes before I had to clock in.

2-minute offense & a 6-iron.

My roommate was in line to clock in, flicking his timecard along his fingers when I told him the news and gave him my phone to read the texts. He shook his head and punched his card with his offhand as he read in expected disbelief.

I walked back to my car. Once there, I popped the trunk, pulled out a 6-iron, & gave it to him as he approached, Then I went up to my passenger’s seat, pulled out my lucky charm – her hoop earring she lost in my car one night – from the center console, & tossed it to him as he took position in the adjoining field. He rested the lucky charm on a couple blades of grass. It took him a couple tries, but eventually he launched that charm halfway across that neglected yard that was to become a temp lot the following month.

Unfortunately, the length of that field wasn’t very long so I walked out, picked the charm back up, and tossed it onto US 12. I still hope it popped a stiff’s tires.

Then I jogged up front and pulled a Smokey Robinson for the next few hours.

I still text her on her birthday.

If you know my phone number, you know what day that is.
