Thanks to an explosion in pagan folk groups at home and abroad, and mainstream rock bands dabbling in folk sounding tracks, I could have easily done a top 20 or top 50.

The common features between the bands are, at least, leanings towards paganism and prehistoric, sometimes medieval, aesthetics. Musically speaking, there's elements from dark/neofolk, traditional folk music and tribal-, ritual-, or dark ambient. Some artists have new age and medieval influences. Many of these artists are somehow linked to metal community or other subculture. They kind of create their own scene and therefore there's no many educated "professional" folk musicians involved. I decided to include releases rather than artists cause it looks better.
