Orlando Magic at Atlanta Hawks: Game Preview

ATLANTA – There was a lot to like about the script of the Orlando Magic’s season opener.

Paolo Banchero had a historically dominant debut, the team went on a scorching 19-0 stretch early in the contest, and Jalen Suggs caught fire, scoring 18 of his 21 points in the second half.

Unfortunately for the Magic, the game did not have a storybook ending. Orlando dropped a 113-109 decision in Detroit as live-ball turnovers, excessive fouls and rebounding all played a factor in the close defeat.

The Magic (0-1) will aim to build on their strong effort and bounce back when they visit the Atlanta Hawks (1-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.

“The most important thing is that we keep working on our stuff,” said Magic forward Franz Wagner, who posted 20 points, four rebounds and five assists against Detroit. “Improve on (the things we struggled with in Detroit), and I think we’ll be in good shape."

The Magic will certainly be hoping for an encore effort from the 2022 NBA Draft’s No. 1 overall pick. Banchero put together a phenomenal performance, notching 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.

“It was really impressive. That’s history,” said Magic guard Terrence Ross of Banchero's debut. “It was amazing. You don’t even realize what he’s doing out there until you just see him play. He’s super athletic, can do a lot of different things, can score the ball, (and) plays defense. So, it’s a good start for him to build on.”

One of the main keys for Orlando heading into their matchup with Atlanta will be limiting the Hawks’ electrifying backcourt. Trae Young and Dejounte Murray combined for 43 points, 24 assists, and six steals in Atlanta’s 117-107 victory over the Houston Rockets in their season opener on Wednesday.

“I think it’s a dynamic backcourt,” said Magic Head Coach Jamahl Mosley. “You have to understand how you guard each one differently. Understanding how we’re picking up, where we’re picking up, and understanding what they’re both capable of. So, it presents a very good challenge, but I think it’s one that our guys are going to be up for.”

IN AND OUT: Orlando will be without Markelle Fultz (fractured big left toe), Gary Harris (left knee injury recovery), Jonathan Isaac (left knee injury recovery), and Moe Wagner (sprained right midfoot). Cole Anthony, who missed the team's opener with an illness, went through shootaround on Friday and will play against the Hawks.

For Atlanta, Bogdan Bogdanovic (right knee injury recovery) is out.

KEY STATS: There was no shortage of impressive stats from Banchero and the Magic against the Pistons.

According to NBA History, since 1969, only three No. 1 overall picks have dropped 25-plus points, five-plus rebounds, and five-plus assists in their NBA debut: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, LeBron James, and Banchero. Talk about elite company.

But it doesn’t stop there.

Banchero scored 27 points at Detroit. That total matches the fourth-most points in an NBA debut during the last 30 seasons (since 1993-94). The only three to do better? Lamar Odom (30 points – Nov. 2, 1999), Allen Iverson (30 points – Nov. 11, 1996) and Gordan Giriček (29 points – Oct. 30, 2002).

“It means a lot,” said Banchero to be mentioned with players like James. “Obviously, would have liked to win, but I just wanted to play hard, play for the team, and that happened. So, it’s a blessing.”

Banchero wasn’t alone in his success. All three of the Magic’s latest lottery picks delivered quality outings. In fact, according to Sportradar, Banchero (19 years old), Suggs (21 years old) and Wagner (21 years old) became the first 21-or-younger trio to all have 20-plus points in a season opener in NBA history.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “Luka (Doncic). Obviously, a very tall player. A little different physique than me, probably a little stronger and knows how to use his body really well. And he plays point guard even when he was in Madrid. Part of it is experience. Obviously, I’m watching a lot of film of myself, but also of players like that.” – Wagner on which players he’s watched film of to continue to improve as a point forward

Reviews for "From the Radio to the Stage: Atlanta 107 1 Magic's Concerts and Events"

1. John - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with Atlanta 107 1 magic. The selection of songs was very limited and repetitive. It seemed like they only played the same popular songs over and over again. I was hoping for more variety and new music. Additionally, the DJs lacked personality and enthusiasm. It felt like I was just listening to a generic playlist with no real human connection. Overall, I won't be tuning in again.
2. Emily - 1 star - I couldn't stand Atlanta 107 1 magic. The constant interruptions by ads and commercials were incredibly annoying. It felt like there was more time spent on advertising than actual music. The station also seemed to cater to a very specific demographic, ignoring the diverse range of music tastes in Atlanta. I would not recommend this station to anyone looking for a well-rounded and enjoyable listening experience.
3. Mike - 3 stars - Atlanta 107 1 magic was just okay. It didn't really stand out for me. The music selection was average at best, and there was nothing unique or special about the station. It was just another generic pop music station with nothing distinctive to offer. I wouldn't actively seek out this station again, but if it's on, I wouldn't necessarily turn it off either.
4. Sarah - 2 stars - I was hoping for more from Atlanta 107 1 magic, but it fell short of my expectations. The DJ banter was cringe-worthy and lacked any real substance. It felt forced and unnatural. The music played was also predictable and lacked any surprises. It's like they were playing it safe and not taking any risks. Overall, I found the station to be boring and uninteresting.
5. Alex - 1 star - Atlanta 107 1 magic was a major disappointment. The sound quality was terrible, with constant static and distortion. It made it almost unbearable to listen to, especially with headphones. I tried adjusting the settings on my radio, but it didn't help improve the quality. It's a shame because I was excited to listen to this station, but unfortunately, the poor sound quality ruined the experience for me.
