dangers of the night: the witch, the devil, and the "nightmare" in early modern england Charlotte-Rose Millar abstract This article focuses on associations between early modern English witchcraft, demonic activity, temptation and transformation, and the night. It has a particular emphasis on "nightmare" encounters, a term used here not in the modern sense of a bad dream but in the premodern sense of a physical assault by a supernatural being. In most early modern nightmare encounters, victims reported that it was either the Devil or, more commonly, a witch assaulting them in the night. However, in stories of accused witches reporting nightmare encounters, we see a distinctly different belief: that devils could lie on potential witches as part of a process of demonic temptation and transformation. In this article I will argue that these nightmare encounters represented a physical manifestation of an internal struggle against Satan. In doing so I will revisit and reinterpret current.

In early modern England witches were viewed as malicious, dangerous men and women who failed to properly regulate their emotions. Accused witches were often portrayed in popular pamphlets as impoverished, once-powerless men and women who, through their pact with the Devil, were able to draw on diabolical power to act out their desires. In English witchcraft narratives, the Devil most commonly appeared as a small domestic animal known as a familiar spirit. Familiars performed a dual role, a duality related to their two origins: they were devils from hell sent to the witch to tempt her, and they were external embodiments of witches' internal thoughts and desires, sent from her to act out those desires and thoughts in the world. Through forming a personal bond with this creature in the form of a demonic pact, witches were able to act upon their overwhelming hatred, envy, malice and greed to maim or kill their neighbours, destroy livestock and kill children.

Thomas Aquinas’ ideas have frequently been considered as one of the intellectual cornerstones of early modern European witch-hunts. His revolutionary approach to the study of angels created the conceptual basis that allowed theologians and other members of the cultural elite to explain the physical and visible manifestations of demons in the material world, especially their interactions with human beings. Nevertheless, the penetration of Aquinas’ notions among Protestant demonologists have sometimes been doubted or considered imperfect. English authors of witchcraft tracts, for example, have been pointed out as continuators of Augustine of Hippo’s gnoseological pessimism or John Calvin’s minimalist position on the matter. This article aims to demonstrate that despite being Calvinists, English demonologists adopted Thomistic ideas about the nature and features of demonic bodies, one of the essential problems of Christian demonological theory. The central hypothesis is that English authors resorted to demonological concepts developed by Aquinas in the thirteenth century and synthetized by late medieval and early modern European demonologists to rectify popular ideas about demons delineated in witchcraft pamphlets published during Elizabethan and early Stuart periods
