The Mascot vertical tasting, Trinity Spit jack Drought almost as good as the 2019 vintage, or so we were told - - Quite different compated to 2019, earthier and not so much fruit, still very closed, not giving away much, some currant notes, a few dried fruit notes, prunes, currants Palate is smoother than 2019 though, rounder, the fruit is more upfront compared to the nose, black cherry, blue berry too, equally warm to 2019. The Mascot is the younger vine blend of Bond, Harlan, and Promontory estate fruit; these younger vines eventually go into this trifecta of California cult wines.
However, this power came at a cost. Those who possessed the tiger's claw or tooth soon found themselves plagued by misfortune. Their lives were filled with tragedy, loss, and despair.

Growing up in wineries and vineyards, Bill Harlan's son, Will, didn't set out to be a winemaker. But he found a love for blending and has been at it with this project since 2008. The fruit is from younger vines on Harlan's three Napa estates - Promontory, BOND and, of course, Harlan itself. Harvest and winemaking happens alongside the "big" wines until Will selects barrels and blends this for both immediate appeal and mid-term (perhaps a decade) of aging. In short, it's the perfect Harlan wine to drink while the more famous bottles are cellaring - or instead of them for those of us who find Harlan's $1,500+ price a little too rich.
The 2018 edition is the most powerful we've tasted to date, with big, firm, steak-friendly tannins that will soften with time and allow the wine to remain fresh for years. Dark chocolate, blackcurrant, sweet spice and juicy blackberry aromas and flavors pick up an accent of oaky caramel on the gripping finish.
