The cloaked witch book 2

Ignoring the warnings and whispers of caution in his mind, Ethan opened the book and began to explore its contents. Unbeknownst to Ethan, the tome had been enchanted by a mischievous and powerful succubus. As he delved deeper into the pages, he unknowingly activated a curse that would forever change his fate.

The Hidden Witch (Witch Boy #2)

Aster and his family are adjusting to his unconventional talent for witchery; unlike the other boys in his family, he isn't a shapeshifter. He's taking classes with his grandmother and helping to keep an eye on his great-uncle whose corrupted magic wreaked havoc on the family. Meanwhile, Aster's friend from the non-magical part of town, Charlie, is having problems of her own -- a curse has tried to attach itself to her. She runs to Aster and escapes it, but now the friends must find the source of the curse before more people -- normal and magical alike -- get hurt.

Gr 4-6-In this adventurous sequel to The Witch Boy, Aster is finally allowed to learn witchery alongside the girls in his family, while his best friend Charlie is excited by the prospect of a new friendship at (nonmagic) school with shy, guarded Ariel. But mysterious happenings pick up quickly when Charlie is visited by a malevolent spirit and when magic meddles in her first basketball game. Meanwhile, in return for extra lessons, Aster helps his grandmother heal the monster who endangered his life and who, deep down, is also his great-uncle Mikasi. Ostertag skillfully develops the setting and action while tackling topics such as friendship, jealousy, bullying, and identity. Themes of embracing differences and the long-term effects of intolerance carry over from the previous installment, as readers are introduced to a diverse, expanding cast. The bold art is inviting; clear-cut, brightly colored panels with warm autumnal tones keep scenes moving and shift into muted shades to enhance the creep factor. Depictions of Mikasi's dragon-esque form and foreboding shadow shapes are the perfect level of spooky for the target audience. VERDICT An exciting continuation of Aster's supernatural journey, whose coming-of-age messages will resonate with middle graders.--Ashleigh Williams, School Library Journal

The curse seeped into his very being, infecting each spell he cast with a touch of darkness. At first, Ethan didn't notice anything amiss. His spells seemed to be just as strong as before, if not slightly more potent. But as time passed, the curse began to reveal its true nature. Every time Ethan tapped into his magic, a shadowy aura would envelop him, and a sinister voice would whisper promises of untold power and dominance. Consumed by his ambition, Ethan continued to channel his abilities, despite the warnings from his fellow magic practitioners. With each spell cast, Ethan's appearance slowly transformed. His once vibrant and youthful features became more haggard and sinister, mirroring the influence of the succubus curse. As the curse grew more powerful, its insidious effects infiltrated Ethan's mind. He became plagued by dark thoughts and desires, succumbing to the temptations woven by the succubus. The line between right and wrong blurred, and Ethan found himself using his magic for selfish purposes, walking down a dangerous path of black magic. Fearing for the safety of their magical realm and the consequences of Ethan's actions, the elder magicians decided to intervene. They devised a plan to confront Ethan and break the hold of the succubus curse. Gathering their collective powers and ancient artefacts, they sought to purge the darkness that had taken hold of the promising young spellcaster. With immense effort and determination, the elder magicians cornered Ethan within the depths of his magical sanctum. Battle lines were drawn, and energy crackled in the air as they engaged in a fierce confrontation. Ethan's corrupted magic clashed with the collective strength of the elder magicians, vying for dominance over his soul. Finally, after a grueling struggle, the elder magicians managed to weaken the succubus curse and sever its ties to Ethan's essence. Exhausted and battle-worn, they watched as the shadows lifted from Ethan's form, leaving him weak and vulnerable but free from the curse's influence. From that day forward, Ethan carried the scars of his encounter with the succubus curse. The once-promising junior spellcaster had learned a valuable lesson about the dangers of ambition and the temptations that lurk in forbidden knowledge. With his newfound humility, Ethan vowed to use his magic for the betterment of others, never again succumbing to the darkness that had once threatened to consume him..
