Dear all, I am very excited to announce the upcoming Winter Magic Tournament that will be taking place on December 15th. This tournament is open to all magic enthusiasts, both beginners and experienced players. Whether you are a master of card tricks or a wizard with illusions, this tournament is the perfect opportunity to showcase your skills and compete against other talented magicians. The Winter Magic Tournament will be held at the prestigious Grand Hall, which will be transformed into a magical wonderland for the event. The venue will be adorned with twinkling lights, ice sculptures, and a cozy fireplace to create a truly enchanting atmosphere. The evening promises to be filled with mind-boggling performances, jaw-dropping acts, and a lot of fun.

I assume it means that crafting doesnt count, but manually creating the enchantment through the normal MA tab does.

I have this under 'What's New' in my personal server. I called it new quest wording - functions same as Collect Enchantments. By the way I also have this as an unresolved Bug Report on Beta Discord Forum ( still waiting on my !! ) because I personally Beta tested this, by winning a teleport spell in Spire!

Oh yeah did I mention I love pushing the envelope over on Beta?

It is just weird wording. We noticed it on Beta too. We already have "produce" and "collect", and now "create". "Create" seems to be a mix of the first two, with some exceptions.

Is it just me or do a large number of the quests in this event require you to collect/use enchantments? It is not really a problem for me, I've got large stockpiles of enchantments. But I could see it being an issue for newer cities.

When you get to the locked quests it's easier: if you use PoP and/or MM spells in your city anyhow, you can place them normally. But while I am still doing multiple quests/day, that means I am sparkling my high culture buildings with EEs non-stop because I don't want to 'waste' the other spells running them overnight. Those buildings are going to shine for the next 2 weeks, lol.

Remember that the duration is only updated if the enchantment is placed after the Lighthouse of Good Neighborhood is built/leveled up. Extending the duration of the enchantment does not retroactively extend previously placed enchantments.

What kind of troops does the "adaptation workout" building give? That icon is 2mm tall on my screen. It's kinda bluish and v-shaped.
The flavor text mentions "wanderers", which doesn't really help.

was just about to post about that. Seems we got a new (ish) quest. 'Create enchantments' as opposed to the normal gather enchantments.

That makes no sense. To say that they "can be won in the Magic Academy" and then to say they can't be crafted is typical doublespeak. Why am I not surprised?

Once upon a time, old tech tree and before I did the research for some of the enchantments, you would occasionally get a a crafting recipe to create the enchantments you hadn’t yet unlocked. I don’t know if these recipes still exist for new cities on the new tech tree.

Doing Tasks in the past, was akin to a well
choreographed dance. It wasn't overly hard
but it was specific as to do certain things,
certain ways, and in a specific order. You
couldn't get too far ahead unless you could
leapfrog certain stretches of tasks.

Todays tasks seem haphazzard, unorganized,
with only a few devious successive tasks. Sure
we also now have more "stoppers" for a variety
of players, not just the newbies. yet they have
been crushed by the new tree, making events a
lesson in futility early on.

Seems, either the person making up the task list
is being micromanaged from above, or they seem
to have a lack of imagination and complexity.

Winter Magic takes over Castaic Lake

Laughs, snow and lights galore: Castaic Lake celebrated its 28th annual Winter Magic event on the first Saturday of December, continuing tradition with an attendance of over 400 people.

Hosted by Friends of Castaic Lake, in cooperation with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks & Recreation, the event encouraged residents to partake in festive fun, while waiting for sunset to watch the lighted boat parade.

“Friends of Castaic Lake is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the enhancement and promotion of Castaic Lake. As a volunteer group, we are involved in and support various lake activities including the Junior Lifeguards, float tube derbies … and Winter Magic,” said Courtney Tole-Schmitz, vice president of Friends of Castaic Lake. “We also work in support of other organizations in the community including the Boy Scouts of America, Castaic (Union) School District, Wounded Warriors Foundation, Relay for Life and more.”

Along with John & John — DJs who are members of Friends of Castaic Lake and provided entertainment — children could ride sleds down the snow, get their faces painted and even write a letter to Santa.

In addition, those who donated an unwrapped $10 toy to the Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley or one canned food item for the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry could receive 10 or one raffle ticket(s), respectively.

As the sun set, attendees gathered around the lake to watch the eight contestants participate and proudly show their decorated boats for a chance to win a prize.

According to Tole-Schmitz, Tommy’s Boats placed first, Mike Kocik placed second and Greg Wolf placed third.

Micaela Gonzalez, an event coordinator for L.A. County Parks & Recreation, attributed the success of the event to the efforts of Friends of Castaic Lake, who collaborated with the park.

“Friends of Castaic Lake is a nonprofit that supports park programming. They’ll do fundraising, sell little things to help the park programs and they’re the ones that pay,” Gonzalez said. “A lot of the things were donated by them for us to have the resources, whether it’s the hot cocoa, the lighting, the face painter.”

Gonzalez discussed the process of bringing the event back post-COVID, and the overall atmosphere surrounding Winter Magic.

“This is the 28th year of our Winter Magic featuring a lighted boat parade. There are people who are volunteering, and overall the turnout has been phenomenal,” Gonzalez said. “Especially after the last few years where we stayed safe, but now, people are feeling a lot better about seeing their neighbors again.”

Gonzalez recognizes the upward trend of attendees and looks forward to the attendance of local residents for future holiday events.

“The word has been getting out again. I think we went from having, let’s say 100, to now 300 people,” Gonzales said. “That’s great for our small community, since we’re not in the middle of all the hustle and bustle, but we still do get some people from the (San Fernando) Valley.”

The volunteers included Vicky Jamison, a first-year volunteer who felt encouraged by Gonzalez and happy to participate.

Larry De George, along with his wife, Nanette, volunteered together while looking forward to the evening boat show.

“My wife volunteers for the senior center up [here]. I’m the president of the Flying Club, and we deal with the park all the time. So whenever something happens, we’re aware of it. When we heard about this, my wife said we should probably volunteer,” De George said.

“I’m from Castaic — I’m a volunteer and a senior citizen. We’re here doing our boat race and we’re having a really good time,” Nanette said. “There’s a lot of free stuff for the kids — hot dogs, hot chocolate, Santa’s here, and we’re just having a good old time. Merry Christmas to everybody, and a happy, happy new year.”

Combo Winter

Combo Winter is a term used to define the general metagame after the release of Urza's Saga. Players believed that too many overpowered cards and combos filled all the tournament formats. This moved the DCI to ban a large number of cards in December 1998. When that was not effective, more cards were banned in March 1999, and for the first time in history a Magic card was banned almost immediately after it was released, since it was discovered that the card Memory Jar from the recently released expansion, Urza's Legacy, threatened to prolong Combo Winter.

The metagame after the release of Mirrodin is now sometimes referred to as the second Combo Winter. First, the Extended format of Pro Tour New Orleans was overrun by fast paced combo decks using many of the new cards, which was handled by banning a total of six cards the following December. However, when Darksteel, the second expansion of the Mirrodin block, was released, the popular Affinity archetype succeeded in overpowering most decks in Standard, particularly with the use of Skullclamp and Arcbound Ravager. Although Skullclamp was banned from all formats except for Vintage in June 2004, the metagame remained Affinity-oriented, yet no more bannings took place until March 2005, in which 8 cards (Arcbound Ravager, Disciple of the Vault and all 6 artifact lands) were banned from Standard, amounting to a total of 9 cards banned in Standard in less than a year.

Unix and Software Tools Winter 2024

This course serves as a guided introduction to the Unix operating system and a variety of software tools. Students in this course will work on Unix workstations, available in the Department’s laboratory. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with Unix and will be able to use Git as a collaborative tool. As a final project, students will work together in teams to explore an API of their choice. The exact topics to be covered may vary depending upon the needs and desires of the students. The course is designed for individuals who understand basic program development techniques as discussed in an introductory programming course (Computer Science 134 or equivalent), but who wish to become familiar with a broader variety of computer systems and programming languages. This course is not intended for students who have completed a course at the 200 level or above.

Enrollment Preferences: Preference will be given to students who have not yet completed a CSCI course at the 200 level or above.

Unit Notes: Lida graduated from Williams in 2002 as a double major in CS and Psych. She returned in 2014 and spent 4 years working in Alumni Relations before joining the staff of the CS Dept in 2019 where she provides instruction support for the intro classes.
