Hyperactive gonzo calamity of converging influences - for the most transparent of IP reasons this adaptation is technically Dragon Pearl as per the dub, but the filler arcs have been scrapped for all the machine guns and explosives of John Woo's Thailand-shot war films from the 80s. These moments burst with a legitimate energy foreign elsewhere, loaded with the flaming remnants of village huts and fleeing masses, while the martial arts themselves serve as little more than a means to comedy.
Taiwanese cheapness means it's entirely lacking in ki blasts despite being high on wire synergy, the vaguely wuxia-esque combat a soaring nonsense in the way it rolls Dragon Ball's dynamics of buffoonery / badassery into one bickering mess. The real physicality is saved for the endless come-ons of "Can't help myself!" sex pest humour, as harassment proves motive, action and scenario, including a lengthy detour into Master Roshi's turtle-shelled, chest-gawking pelvic thrust of an existence. This is perhaps the one truly shameless reveal of identity theft, otherwise no one's credited as their source characters and all the costumes are about 25% off brand. Though while it drags in the bootleg existence of something just legally distant, it does happen to feature a fiercely committed performance by a cockatoo without remorse.

Published roriconfan Nov 14 2010Ok, seriously, if you compare it with the 2009 Dragonball movie, this low budget film is 10 times more enjoyable. It follows the general story of the anime, it has good battles and it even has a far more exciting finale. Yes, the visual effects are crap and the storyline written for 5 year olds. This is clearly a movie aimed at fans of the anime who were disappointed with the recent film (man, the producers must have been seers or something).
Anyways, as far as the plot goes it is average at best. The visuals suck, the characters are one-dimensional. But there is enough action, humor and tribute to the original to make this a worthy watch if you keep an open mind. I for once liked it for being what it is. A poorly made film by nobodies that has more passion and interest that Evolution.

This live-action adaptation of Dragon Ball was a major disappointment. The actors lacked the charisma and charm of the original characters, and their performances felt wooden and forced.
