As a Basara, Nyx really would just like Rend Heaven, as though Quixotic would help her hitrate, it would also help her enemy s hitrate, which would be quite dangerous. Her high speed and magic make her a nightmare when she gets leveled up, as she is practically Orochi with slightly less nuke power and the ability to double.

Fates Reclass Option Discussion Day 22: Nyx

Ugghhhh I tried to forestall this for as long as possible for various reasons. Okay, here we go. Today we're going to talk about Nyx, a fairly controversial unit for various reasons. But before we talk about that, let's talk bases.

Small Start

Nyx begins as a Dark Mage in Conquest chapter 9. Her bases are as such:

20 HP/ 1 Str/ 12 Mag/ 5 Skl/ 11 Spd/ 3 Lck/ 4 Def/ 8 Res

While her growths without Dark Mage's help are:

30/ 5/ 50/ 35/ 50/ 20/ 15/ 30

As you can see, Nyx fits in as a fragile speedster, which is already a class with its flaws. Unfortunately, I am quite fond of this class regardless of flaws, so I was understandably more drawn to Nyx than Odin in my first trial of Fates. Unfortunately, Nyx has to flaws that a true fragile speedster is strong in: skill and luck. These two stats make Nyx a very shaky unit to use, as she could very easily mess up and kill herself at completely inopportune moments, causing either her death or a reset.

Dark and Classy

  • Nyx's base class is Dark Mage, which (spoilers) is the class she really wants to stay in if she wants to do anything offensively. Her high speed and magic make her a nightmare when she gets leveled up, as she is practically Orochi with slightly less nuke power and the ability to double. She gets the skill Malefic Aura and Heartseeker as a Dark Mage. As Odin's opposite, she won't find Malefic Aura particularly useful after she starts really killing things, but Heartseeker is always something she's going to want due to low skill. When she promotes, she can become either a Dark Knight or a Sorcerer. Dark Knight always has the bonus of beefing her up, though her defense is never going to be particularly good. She can get Seal Magic, although she's not really going to be in a position to where that'll be useful. Lifetaker would be useful, if only Nyx had enough health to really get much HP back from it. I'm not even going to discuss swords in this scenario. As a Sorcerer, Nyx can hang on to Nosferatome, allowing her to pretty much have Lifetaker, but without actually killing enemies. If you take out Nosferatu, Nyx could use Vengeance to deal extra damage if your skill gets high enough. Meanwhile, Bowbreaker allows Nyx to dodge some pesky bows while making certain angsty archers miserable. Unfortunately, she does lose her Dark Knight movement, but she gains everything she really cares about, so that's that, I guess.

Reclassing

Hoo, boy. Nyx has the reclass option of Outlaw, which is. interesting.

  • First off, Nyx gets locktouch and movement +1, both of which are some pretty decent utility skills for her to have. Of course, the glaring problem with Outlaw is the bowlock, not to mention Nyx having pathetic strength. Have fun with that. Anyways, Nyx can also become an Adventurer where, unless you've been grinding up bows for some reason, she's probably just gonna be a staffbot. But hey, at least she's a fashionable staffbot. She can get Lucky 7 and Pass from this, both of which are fairly useful for her dodging abilities if she goes back to Sorcerer. Bow Knight gives Rally Skill, which she doesn't really want, as well as Shurikenbreaker, which she really wants to get rid of those pesky ninja that kill her easily. Unfortunately, this results in her living with E Rank swords and bows. Like I said before. Good luck with that. It is nice for going back to Sorcerer, but it's not going to be particularly worth it.

. Friends?

Nyx's friends consist of Orochi, Effie, Charlotte, and Mozu. You can probably guess which one I want to talk about, huh? Well, there's actually only one I don't want to talk about! See? Fooled you!

  • Charlotte and Nyx are not compatible. I honestly don't understand why they're supportable by a gameplay perspective. I guess HP+5 is semi-useful for Nyx, but it runs out very quickly. Gamble is just. bad. Sorcerer has enough internal crit and Nyx's skill is low enough. In Hero, Nyx doesn't really gain enough health for Sol to be useful, while Axebreaker isn't useful as Nyx can already dodge axes really well. Meanwhile, Beserker completely destroys everything Nyx loves and replaces it with what Charlotte loves. Oh, joy.
  • Effie give Nyx the Knight class. As you could guess (and as with any class Nyx reclasses to) Nyx only wants this deal for skills. Defense +2 and Natural Cover, not so much. Wary Fighter, definitely not. Luna is meh, but Nyx really likes Pavise and Armored Blow. Unfortunately, that's just a lot of grinding for something not so useful, so Effie is better left in the heap, unless you're doing a Revelation grind run or just want to do some future skill buying.
  • Mozu gives Archer, which is. still interesting. If Nyx is already at the Light Bow, I'd say go for it, just so Nyx can get some good skills behind her. Skill +2 is useful for early game Nyx, definitely. Quick Draw as well helps Nyx kill on Player Phase. Sniper's Certain Blow is a godsend for Nyx, getting her a very good hitrate where she's been lacking. Meanwhile, Bowfaire gives Nyx even more power behind her attacks. Unfortunately, bowlock is still bowlock, but as she's using Light Bow it might be a bit more manageable.
  • Orochi gives Nyx Diviner, a good friendship choice. Nyx can get Magic +2 (works well with Malefic Aura) as well as Future Sight, which will never proc due to bad luck. As a Basara, Nyx really would just like Rend Heaven, as though Quixotic would help her hitrate, it would also help her enemy's hitrate, which would be quite dangerous. Onmyoji gives the standard Rally Magic, as well as Tomefaire, in case Nyx wasn't dealing enough damage.

True Marriage

  • Hayato is basically if you forgot to befriend Orochi, or decided to go another path with friendship.
  • Subaki gives Nyx Peg Knight. With this, Nyx pretty much becomes staff utility, unless you decide to grind to C-Rank lances. Nyx does not want to become a Kinshi Knight, although it is manageable. Nyx can gain Darting and Warding Blow in this state for some nice extra speed and resistance as she attacks. She can also gain Rally Speed, as well as Cameraderie. for some (not so) nice healing. She also gets some great movement, so there's that.

So, there's the magical lass herself. Unfortunately, she's not much for front-line fighting, and even more unfortunately I tend to ignore this and use her as much as possible anyways. Oh well.
