What is the best location for a cabin on a cruise ship?

As a cruise writer for more than 20 years, I've heard that question a lot, and it's not an easy one to answer. That's because on any given ship, the best cabin location for one person might not be the best choice for another.

The ideal cabin for a light sleeper on a particular ship, for instance, might be a room tucked away in the quietest corner of the vessel. But another passenger on the same ship who cares more about the view might be happiest with a completely different spot.

On a typical cruise ship, cabins are spread out all over the place — high and low, and to the front, middle and back. Not that that's always the case.

Some cruise vessels — particularly river ships — have cabins clustered at their backs with public areas at their fronts. Other vessels, such as those operated by luxury lines Seabourn and Silversea Cruises, have cabins clustered at their fronts with public areas at their backs.

Cruise cabins also come in all shapes and sizes, and with a variety of amenities and benefits. Some lines such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line offer a huge range of room options, from tiny, windowless "inside" cabins to palatial suites, in all sorts of locations on their vessels.

Indeed, there's such a wide variety of not just cabin locations but types of cabins on ships that the best way to narrow down the choices of accommodations on any given vessel might be to assemble a list of cabins you definitely don't want to choose.

Reviews for "Discover the Hidden Gems of the Sea from a Carnival Magic Premium Balcony Cabin"

1. John - 2 stars - The premium balcony cabin on the Carnival Magic was a major disappointment. The room was small and cramped, with barely enough space to move around. The balcony was tiny and overlooked a crowded deck, so there was no privacy. The bed was uncomfortable and the decor was outdated. Overall, it felt like a run-down motel room rather than a cruise ship cabin. I would not recommend upgrading to a premium balcony cabin on this ship.
2. Sarah - 1 star - I was incredibly disappointed with the premium balcony cabin on the Carnival Magic. The room was dirty and in need of a deep clean. The carpets were stained and the bathroom had a musty odor. The balcony was so small that I could barely fit a chair on it, let alone comfortably enjoy the view. The bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the soundproofing was terrible - I could hear every conversation and noise from the neighboring cabins. It was a terrible experience and I will never choose a premium balcony cabin on Carnival Magic again.
3. Michelle - 2 stars - The premium balcony cabin on the Carnival Magic was a letdown. The room was cramped and lacked storage space for our belongings. The balcony was so narrow that it was hard to fully enjoy the outdoor space. The decor was dated and worn-out, with chipped furniture and faded wallpaper. The bathroom was small and the shower could barely fit one person comfortably. Overall, it was not worth the upgrade fee and I would recommend choosing a different cabin option on this ship.
