Yankee Candle Patchouli vs. Witches Brew: Which Scent Reigns Supreme?

By admin

Yankee Candle patchouli and Witches Brew are two popular scents in the candle industry. Patchouli is a classic fragrance that is often associated with an earthy and musky aroma. It is derived from the leaves of the patchouli plant and has been used for centuries in perfumes and incense. Yankee Candle offers a patchouli-scented candle that captures the essence of this fragrance. The candle is made with high-quality materials and features a long-lasting burn time. It has a strong scent throw, meaning that it can fill a room with its fragrance and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Yankee Candles. Is this crazy?

I didn't know that there was a patchouli Yankee Candle. Is it seasonal, or gone all together- I love the smell- my Aveda scent is essence 9 which is patchouli, sandalwood and something else. I have it in shampoo, conditioner, body oil, bathsalts and 'purefume'. I guess that counts as an addiction, hmmm?

Any info on that candle would be GREAT!

As much as I love my Yankee Candles, I can't imagine spending what they are asking for some of these candles on ebay. I have quite a few of the black band candles. Didn't realize they were worth anything.

Well, if anyone has any Granny Smith that they want to get rid of, I'll take them.

You guys are really telling me things I did not know.

The only reason I really love Granny Smith Apple is that it matches my bathroom perfectly and I love the "Fruit" scents much more than any other. I don't do Flower scents at all.

Same here! I used to work at the one in s deerfield during holidays. And after my shift ended, there was always about an hour before the store closed, so i would wonder into the discount room. I usually ran out of time from being in there. lol

Maybe I have missed them but I liked when they had the bags of votives for not a lot of money in the discount area. I think years ago they also had more in the discount room. The discount room sure has moved a lot over the years.

Every time I am in MA. I must visit the factory store. I love it.

Oh my goodness. I'm off to check my candle cabinet now. I think I have a bunch of "rare" and not-so-good smelling varieties in there just waiting to go on Ebay

ETA - I have eight of the black band "chocolate chip cookie" 22oz candles. I haven't burned them because I didn't like the smell when I received them. I bought them on cheap clearance with free shipping years ago. they're going up on Ebay, LOL! Check out this closed auction for 2 of this scent in the smaller 14.5oz jar:

We visited the Jeffersonville OH Yankee Candle outlet a couple of weeks ago and bought my mother a couple of her favorite, Sweet Melon, which has been discontinued. They were $15 for the large jars. One had the black band and one did not. The one with the black band had an obviously stronger scent than the other one.

THat place was absolutely packed from floor to ceiling with candles. If I had known I could make a few bucks by selling discontinued ones I would have spent a lot more money there!!

Patchouli is an online only scent, when available, or in a flagship store (Mass or Williamsburg, Va.) If it's online it's usually in the Back By Popular Demand section. We carry that in the retail stores in votives only, however you may find some odds & ends in the outlets. We also carry a Stress relief scent in our Spa Line which has patchouli in it - and how ironic - in the store yesterday someone told me that it smelled like her Aveda hair products - and she was right! I go to an Aveda Concept Salon (but don't routinely use their products) and it did smell like Aveda. So check out the Spa Stress Relief.

At Halloween, like someone else said, we used to carry Witches Brew which had patchouli in it. Last year they re-named it Purr-chouli (black cat - get it?) It had a hint of black licorice in it too. I'm not kidding when I say people line up outside when Purr-chouli comes in!

Every year there is a Back By Popular Demand section online & in some stores - I have the line-up for this year & Patchouli is on it again. It's usually in late spring & they send us maybe 24 jars of each & when they're gone they're gone.

Hope that's the Paychouli scoop you were looking for!

Yankee Candle Halloween 2016 Collection Review

It would be fair to say that I have a bit of a Thing for Yankee Candles. This nose knows what it knows, and it enjoys the gorgeous variety of scents that they offer. My collection has gotten a little out of hand lately as I’m running out of places to put them, but when I saw that the Halloween 2016 collection of jar candles had launched, I couldn’t resist. There is always room for one (or several) more. Halloween is one of my favourite holidays, and I had bought samplers of two of the scents previously, which I enjoyed. If that wasn’t enough, this year’s charming jar design won me over. I had never been able to catch the Halloween jars in time, but I managed to nab them early this year, including a new and exclusive scent that has been introduced to the lineup!

Yankee Candle Halloween 2016

This year’s launch contains three scents: Candy Corn, Forbidden Apple, and Witches’ Brew. Both Candy Corn and Witches’ Brew have been released in previous years, but Forbidden Apple is new for 2016. As is the case every year, the collection is limited edition as they are only available around Halloween, and the jar design tends to change. The jars come in the medium size of 410g, which burns for 65-90 hours. They are available from the Yankee Candle site for £18.99 each; the standard price for medium jars. I bought Forbidden Apple online, as I wanted to secure this new scent ASAP, and then picked up the others in shops that stock Yankee Candles.

The jars retail for £18.99 each L-R: Candy Corn, Forbidden Apple, Witches’ Brew

The jar design drew me in as I’m a sucker for black, and these glossy black jars are striking. There’s something spooky and mysterious about them (which also made them a real butt to photograph as they reflect the environment). The scribble-style pictures correspond to the scent (cute little candy corn for the Candy Corn scent, grey spiders for Witches’ Brew, green apples for Forbidden Apple), and I personally find them adorable. They remind me of a child’s drawing when they use a stencil. The spider one in particular reminds me of the pattern of a dress that I wore when I was ‘going through a phase’, and there is a part of me that will always have a fondness for these kinds of patterns. Just FYI, I displayed one of the jars in these photos using a spiderweb jar holder that isn’t part of this year’s launch, although it was part of a past Halloween collection by Yankee Candle. I believe that it’s still available on the Clintons site.

I can only review the scents based on a cold sniff as I haven’t burned any of them yet. Witches’ Brew is going to my uncle, and I am saving the other two until at least the start of October (exercising self-restraint). Please excuse dust particles in the photos; arranging those feathers created all sorts of fluff!

Yankee Candle Candy Corn jar

Candy Corn is listed by Yankee Candle with the description: The familiar, sweet scent of candy corn is a fond reminder of Halloween fun and treats. This is a gourmand scent inspired by the popular American sweets, candy corn. These aren’t sold in the UK so I can’t compare the scent to the real thing for faithfulness, but I can say that this has a sweet, delicious, caramel type of smell, like the treats that you would gorge on for Halloween. The sweetness would also work well as a Christmas scent. Out of the three, this was the most popular in our house, and is a generally safe and inoffensive scent, so would be ideal for parties. This candle tends to get a ‘yum!’ reaction. To my nose, some notes are reminiscent of Yankee Candle’s discontinued Salted Caramel candle, perhaps the caramel and buttery/milky notes, although Candy Corn is much lighter and more like sweets. In keeping with the colour scheme, the wax is a vibrant orange (I almost want to bite it?). This one is possibly my favourite! It has a decently strong scent on cold sniff, although some have reported that it has a weak throw when lit, so it is something to consider.

Yankee Candle Forbidden Apple jar

Forbidden Apple is listed by Yankee Candle with the description: A seductive potion that takes apple—mixed with bergamot, black oak and vanilla noir—to someplace forbidden. The scent of crisp apples is (fittingly) the main note in this candle. There is a hint of spiciness, and soft vanilla sweetens the scent, but it is predominantly apple. It is more sharp than Yankee Candle’s Sweet Apple, and with more depth, but the apple note is similar. The smell is pleasant, although it could have been made more Halloween-appropriate with stronger woody notes and perhaps some spices or herbs, even liquorice, to bring out a poisoned apple vibe. It is a fresh, fruity scent, and I can see it being suitable as an everyday scent rather than just for Halloween. The wax is a vivid green, and the texture reminds me of a bubbling cauldron, which I adore. I almost don’t want to burn it and ruin the fabulous texture! I can picture Disney’s Maleficent burning this while she puts on her makeup. This scent is new for 2016, unlike the others, so it may be hard to get hold of as Halloween draws closer.

Yankee Candle Witches’ Brew jar

Witches’ Brew is listed by Yankee Candle with the description: The spicy sweet aroma of exotic patchouli casts a captivating spell! I’m not sure what pure patchouli smells like, but to me, this smells earthy and masculine, with some spice and outdoorsy sweetness. It’s difficult to describe, but it is evocative of soil and trees, with a spiciness similar to aftershave, and an incense-like heaviness. Something about it makes me think of cola, maybe a hint of cinnamon or citrus in there? Perhaps a witch is drinking Coke while she mixes a potion in a graveyard (definitely the kind of witch that I would be!). It may not be to everyone’s taste, but it screams Halloween. It it is a heavy and intoxicating scent that is unlike anything I own. I love that the wax is black; it will look amazing when it melts, and currently appears to look like a poisoned cauldron, with the bubbles set in the wax. This one is going to my uncle as a birthday present, as it strikes me as his kind of thing. It’s really different. Think of the kind of organic aftershave scent that you might get from Lush; that is what this scent reminds me of. I can see the throw being immense once it is lit, as I could already smell it across the room when the lid was removed, and so it may be overpowering unless placed in a large room. It would work for adding atmosphere to an outdoors Halloween party. I like this one for the intrigue, and also for the fact that it is specifically suited to Halloween. If Candy Corn is like a fairy princess Halloween costume, Witches’ Brew is a truly horrifying witch costume, with bats in her hair and entrails in her cauldron.

Candy Corn and Witches’ Brew votives

Last year, I bought these votives online to get an idea of the scents. I think that these label designs are from the 2013 Halloween collection, but the scents inside are the same as this year’s corresponding candles. The votive size of Witches’ Brew may be all you need to fill a small room if you find that the jar size is overpowering, as the scent packs a punch. Personally, I wouldn’t need a larger size than this to have enough of it, but if patchouli is your thing, it may be handy to pick up the jar version while they’re available.

I would definitely recommend checking out these candles if you get the opportunity. The range of scents, from caramel-like candy corn, to fresh apple, to powerful patchouli, will have something for most people to enjoy. If you love Halloween and all things creepy, you’ll love the beautiful black jars, and when the wax is gone, you could use them to store sweets. I’m glad that I got a chance to see the collection together and explore the range of scents on offer this year. I’m sure that I will enjoy burning them throughout October… if I can wait that long.

Thanks for reading, and I hope that you have a happy Halloween 🙂

Halloween 2022- Mid-September Round Up Of Fun Finds

I’ve been picking up autumn bits and bobs since July! TK Maxx had the first Halloween items in stores from the first week of the summer. Of course I love this, and this is a post to share some things I’ve spotted this week, mid-September 2022.

The first is this cute pair of Pumpkin Spice Latte pyjamas from George at Asda. They even have scented candles on them, so it’s a very ‘me’ pair of jammies.

George always have a fantastic range of Halloween pyjamas, if you scroll down you will see a post I did earlier of this year’s matching family pairs.

Next up is this Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Glow in the Dark nail polish, in the colour ‘Ghosted’. It costs £4.99 and I found it in my local Boots. It’s also available online.

It’s very translucent when applied, so I ended up putting in on as a top coat over another colour when I saw how see-through it was going to be. It does glow in the dark, I tried it out last night!

One downside, it has a peculiar smell. I don’t know if it’s Sally Hansen’s formula, as I haven’t bought a varnish from this brand in years, or if it’s the glow in the dark element, but it does have a weird whiff about it.

Finally for this week, I was delighted to find that Yankee Candle U.K. have released a Halloween scent for 2022.

Witches’ Brew has a beautifully sweet patchouli scent which I am very keen on. I loved the old Yankee Candle Patchouli candle that was discontinued, and that is wildly expensive to try to buy on eBay, so I will be stocking up on this fragrance.

I bought mine from Temptation Gifts where it was on offer for £22.39. It is currently out of stock there, but you can add your email to be notified when it’s back in stock to purchase. It’s also available on the Yankee Candle U.K. site, but I haven’t spotted it in their physical stores as yet,

It has a strong scent throw, meaning that it can fill a room with its fragrance and create a warm and inviting atmosphere. On the other hand, Witches Brew is a unique scent that is often associated with mystical and Halloween-inspired themes. It combines notes of patchouli, cinnamon, and other spices to create a complex and intriguing scent.

Yankee candle patchouli vs witches brew

This candle is perfect for those who enjoy more unconventional fragrances and want to add a touch of mystery to their space. Both candles have their own charm and appeal. The Yankee Candle patchouli candle is perfect for those who enjoy a classic and timeless scent, while Witches Brew is ideal for those who want a more whimsical and festive fragrance. Ultimately, the choice between Yankee Candle patchouli and Witches Brew comes down to personal preference and the atmosphere you want to create in your space..

I had high hopes for the Yankee Candle Patchouli vs Witches Brew, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. The scent was overpowering and gave me a headache instead of creating a pleasant atmosphere. The combination of patchouli and witches brew was overwhelming, and I couldn't stand the smell after a few minutes. I ended up returning the candle because I simply couldn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
2. Mike - 1/5
I was extremely disappointed with the Yankee Candle Patchouli vs Witches Brew. The scent was not what I expected at all. It had a strange and unpleasant aroma that didn't remind me of patchouli or witches brew. Instead, it smelled like a mix of chemicals that made me nauseous. Even after burning it for a few hours, the smell didn't improve. I would not recommend this candle to anyone looking for a pleasant and soothing scent.
3. Emily - 2/5
I gave the Yankee Candle Patchouli vs Witches Brew a try, but it just wasn't for me. The patchouli scent was too strong and overpowering, making it difficult to enjoy the candle. The witches brew aspect was barely noticeable, which was disappointing since I was looking forward to a unique and intriguing combination. It left a lingering smell in my home that I couldn't get rid of. Overall, it's not a candle I would repurchase or recommend to others.
