Within the four varnas, there were innumerable sub-castes or jatis. Each jati had its specific occupation and social status, and marriage was typically restricted within the same jati. This rigid social structure led to a lack of social mobility and limited opportunities for individuals to improve their social standing. The pagam king cast was justified through the belief in karma, which holds that one's caste is determined by their actions in previous lives. This belief system meant that individuals had to accept their social position as a result of their past deeds and strive to fulfill their duties within their caste. Failure to do so was believed to lead to negative consequences in future lives. While the caste system provided a sense of order and stability in the society, it also resulted in discrimination and oppression. The lower castes, particularly the Shudras and Dalits (formerly known as untouchables), faced severe social and economic hardships, including restrictions on their rights and access to resources. This discrimination based on caste still persists in some parts of India despite legal and social reforms.
