Summer solstice, a time when the northern hemisphere will experience the maximum hours of sunlight, takes place on June 21 – and will be celebrated by followers of Wicca, a form of contemporary Paganism, with a holiday known as Litha.
On this day the North Pole is at its greatest tilt toward the sun, creating the longest day and the official beginning of summer. As a sociologist of religion whose research has focused on contemporary Paganism, I know that for Wiccans, it is a day of celebration and joy at the light’s full return.
Another popular way to honor the summer solstice is by creating and hanging sun wheels. Traditionally made from woven straw or branches, these wheel-shaped creations are adorned with flowers, herbs, and other items that represent the bounty and beauty of the season. Sun wheels can be hung on doors or walls as a way to bring in the energy of the sun and the blessings of summer. Many witches also take this opportunity to harvest herbs and plants for magical purposes. The summer solstice is a time of abundance and growth, making it ideal for gathering herbs at their peak potency. These herbs can then be used in spells, potions, or as offerings to deities or spirits. Overall, I left feeling unsatisfied and would not recommend this event to others.
