Often a torch was lit and carried around the boundaries of the home and farm, to protect the property and residents against the spirits throughout the winter. I began painting wildlife in the early 1990 s and they evolved into Icons of Nature, using egg tempera paints on traditional gesso boards to capture the essence of the animals I met both in the outer world and my own inner world.
One common practice during Samhain is the setting up of an ancestral altar. This altar is decorated with pictures or symbols representing deceased loved ones, and offerings such as food, drinks, or flowers are placed on the altar to honor and remember them. Wiccans believe that the veil between the living and the spirit realm is thinnest during this time, making it easier to commune with ancestors and seek guidance from the other side.
