The Salem witch hunt is a historical event that took place in colonial Massachusetts between February to May 1692. A series of witchcraft trials and accusations occurred in the small town of Salem, resulting in the execution of 20 individuals, 14 women and 5 men, who were convicted of practicing witchcraft. The witch hunt can be traced back to the winter of 1692, when a group of young girls in Salem Village began exhibiting symptoms of "bewitchment." They screamed, made strange noises, and contorted their bodies in unnatural ways. Unable to find a medical explanation for their behavior, villagers turned to supernatural causes. In search of answers, the authorities conducted trials to determine the source of the supposed witchcraft.
At a given point in the imaging plane, we add up the light rays from different points of the glass surface. This means we carry out some kind of averaging operation.

Magic Door in a Wood
No windows. Just a door. A tiny door up high on the bough of a mossy tree in the middle of a wood in Cornwall near my home. I often come to this spot to be alone and find peace. But I’ve never noticed that little dinky door before…
I peer upwards to try and make out what it is. At least 10 feet above my head. Wondering how on earth a teeny arched wooden door could end up there. Did someone use ladders? Perhaps it was put there to mark someone’s special memory? I feel as if I’m slightly intruding to be looking so closely and asking quite so many questions.
Then, as if from nowhere, I suddenly hear a voice that makes me bolt with surprise. “It’s a Fairy Door”… says the voice.
I turn around and see a white haired older woman pointing upwards to the door with her walking stick. I apologise for nearly jumping out my skin. “A Fairy Door??” I ask. But then somehow stop myself from asking any further logical questions… “Gosh, and what a beautiful little door it is”, says I.
She nods and looks up at the door, and then across at me, almost as if she’s about to cast some enchanting spell. “If you look closely enough”, she says, “you can find Fairy Doors everywhere. It took me years before I could really notice them but now I can see they’re all around.”
And so it was that we both began to speak of fairies and the magic and potential of the unseen doors. Two strangers in a wood, willingly getting lost in a parallel world as our imaginations danced openly together under that little Fairy Door…
It was as if we’d known each other for years. Settled, like moss, in the purity of that moment. An intimately connected and unexpected few minutes unfolded that almost defied time – and left me with the deepest and warmest feelings of awe and delight. Like being in the presence of magic.
The woman began to walk away, “I have a large mossy tree at home in my garden that is also in need of a Fairy Door. Thank you for reminding me”, she said. And, then, she smiled and was gone.
I looked up one last time at the little Fairy Door and decided to retrace my steps in the wood. And she was right. This time, I saw so many Fairy Doors bringing extra sparkles of life to some of those trees around me. Doors I’d completely missed earlier because my mind had been so busy elsewhere. Doors I simply hadn’t looked out for – or even believed – were actually there…
Accusations spread like wildfire, and anyone suspected of practicing witchcraft became a target. Even prominent members of the community, including church leaders, were accused and executed. The hunt finally came to an end when the governor of Massachusetts stepped in and disbanded the court in May 1693.
