During the winter solstice, known as Yule, the Celtic pagans celebrated the rebirth of the sun and the return of light. This celebration was observed by hanging various decorations, such as evergreen boughs, mistletoe, and holly around their homes. The main idea behind these decorations was to symbolize fertility, renewal, and protection against evil spirits. I m still new to this whole thing, even after almost six months, and I m still finding, every week, that I am learning something entirely new, or that my preferences are a little different than I thought they were. The time around December 21 st marks the Winter Solstice in the northern hemisphere. It’s officially the first day of winter containing the shortest day and longest night of the year. Today we barely acknowledge this event, but antiquated Celtic culture celebrated this special moment as the Yule festival. Although we may not know much about Yule, many of our modern Christmas customs were derived from it.
