¿De dónde surge la creencia y superstición de que una pata de conejo trae buena suerte?
Como es bien sabido, una superstición es aquel acto o conducta que condiciona la vida de cualquier individuo que hace o deja de hacer algo ante el convencimiento que, de lo contrario, le podría ocurrir una desgracia. Por tal motivo muchos son los elementos que a lo largo de la historia se han convertido en un amuleto con el que atraer la buena suerte: una herradura, un trozo de madera que tocar, una reliquia perteneciente a una parte del cuerpo de una persona que había sido santificada o una simple pata de conejo (entre otras muchísimas cosas).
La creencia de que una pata de conejo trae buena suerte es una de las más antiguas que existen. Se calcula que ya en el siglo VII a.C. los pueblos celtas ya tenían sus propias supersticiones y creencias y entre ellas estaba la que le otorgaban a los conejos, liebres y algunas especies de roedores. El hecho de que habitasen en madrigueras en el subsuelo hacía pensar a los antiguos celtas que éstos animales estaban en contacto con los Dioses y espíritus del inframundo y, por tanto, esos animales les protegerían. De ahí que mucha ropa de abrigo se realizase con sus pieles, su carne fuese muy preciada en platos de la época y sus huesos se convirtieran en amuletos que llevaban encima colgados en collares, pendientes u otros abalorios.
Con el transcurrir del tiempo la liebre y esos otros roedores fueron adquiriendo una connotación negativa en el folklore popular y sin embargo el conejo siguió disfrutando de ese estatus de animal que proporcionaba suerte o alejaba los malos augurios.
En la época de la Antigua Roma y Grecia el conejo adquirió la categoría de ‘curalotodo’ y muchos eran los ungüentos que se realizaban en el que se utilizaba algunos huesos machacados de este animal. También se frotaban partes dolorida o fracturadas con alguna parte de su cuerpo y sobre todo se convirtió en amuleto (como animal doméstico) para proporcionar fertilidad y una gran prole de hijos, debido a su gran y rápida reproducción.
Avanzando en el tiempo nos encontramos que durante la Edad Media se reforzó la superstición alrededor de los poderes curativos y de buena suerte que podían proporcionar los conejos, pero éstos ya dejaron de ser un animal doméstico para ser llevado uno de sus huesos encima (tal y como ya habían hecho los celtas un milenio atrás).
En una época en la que los consejeros místicos y espirituales de grandes reyes tenían una relevancia importantísima en sus decisiones el portar el hueso del conejo se puso más de moda que nunca entre todas las clases sociales.
El hecho que de la noche al día pasase de servir cualquier hueso del conejo como amuleto a ser específicamente una de sus patas no se sabe a ciencia cierta cuándo ocurrió, pero uno de los escritos más antiguos que hay en relación a ello data del siglo XVI y se trata de un pequeño texto que explica cuál era el amuleto infalible y cómo se debe conseguir.
Dicho texto decía que éste debía ser la pata trasera izquierda de un conejo que tendría que haber muerto a medianoche en un cementerio en una noche sin luna de un viernes 13 y a manos de un jinete de piel negra y cabello pelirrojo, zurdo y bizco que iría montado en un caballo blanco.
Evidentemente el texto y los elementos mencionados no dejan de ser un batiburrillo de supersticiones mezcladas y sin sentido alguna, pero que en su época tuvo gran relevancia, por lo que a base de repetirla hizo que se creyera que la parte del conejo que realmente daba buena suerte era su pata trasera izquierda.
La creencia se extendió por prácticamente todo el planeta y ha llegado hasta nuestros días, en el que podemos encontrar que son innumerables las personas que creen a pies juntillas que el portar consigo una pata de conejo la protegerá de malos augurios y le proporcionará protección y buena suerte.
