The witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, also known as the Salem witch trials, were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of twenty people, most of them women, and the imprisonment of several others. The events that led to the Salem witch trials began in January 1692, when a group of young girls in the town of Salem Village started exhibiting strange behavior and claimed to be possessed by witches. These girls accused three women – Tituba, a slave from Barbados, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne – of bewitching them.
