The Magic Of The Music Video! – The All-American Rejects Month – Move Along

As you may know, I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we look at a band that I have always liked from the first album when I was at school I think I came across their music initially through the music video for Swing Swing and really liked them and found them very different to the music I was listening to. Since that first song I have been a fan but some of their music videos are truly amazing the editing techniques that are used to create a narrative. That is why we are looking at them this month!

The All-American Rejects – Move Along

Why did you choose this particular video?

This song I feel has a really important message and it is one of those songs that whenever I hear it, the music instantly puts me in a good mood. It is really uplifting and has some really powerful lyrics. However, saying that, another reason that this video is on this list is that the editing is phenomenal and blew me away the first time I saw it.

So, what is the narrative?

There is no real information to confirm it but the video follows different narratives where there is a lot of sadness in that persons life all played by Tyson Ritter. One is a doctor, one lives alone and then lots of other situations that people need to ‘move along’ from.

Favourite parts of the video?

The introduction to this video is really interesting and also pretty powerful. If you look at the lyrics and the rest of the visuals of this video you will see it is all about pushing yourself to move on from something bad and opening up the video with a shot of someone falling like this off of a diving board sort of connotes the emotions of someone in a downwards spiral. The editing to the sound is very quiet and the way that it is color graded to focus on the blue is really effective. Also the editing to slow the fall down really impact what the visual is trying to say.

It is really hard to describe it in a still but have a look at the video at the top – there is a reason that I love this video and it is the chorus. In every shot Tyson Ritter who plays more then one character, is positioned in exactly the same frame of the camera to create this really fantastic edit between all of the shots. The montage is one of my favourite clips in any music video as it is so clever and is really effective, lots of quick cuts between lots of different footage and it is so effective.

About two thirds of the way though there is a call back shot to the opening and again this is why this shot is effective and makes this shot so powerful. The shot starts with the same shot as the opening Tyson slowing falling backwards into a pool, however, this time the angle changes and you see a mosh of people there to capture him. The messages in this video are so important and so powerful that this angle and the slow down speed of the arms raising bring this all back. Also this side shot has bushes and green in it which you don’t see in the beginning which connote a sign of hope and ‘moving along’.

Through all the years of strife and triumph, America has been shaped not just by our elected leaders and our formal politics but also by our music—by the lyrics, performers, and instrumentals that have helped to carry us through the dark days and to celebrate the bright ones.
