An oral history of The Worst Witch

This year, The Worst Witch turned 40. Jill Murphy’s children’s book about Mildred Hubble, a hapless pupil at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches was an instant success when it was first published in 1974. Many decades and sequels later, her pre-Hogwarts stories of broomstick flying and potions classes continue to inspire young readers.

Halloween was always a very important occasion at Mildred's school with the whole school staying asleep until midday the next day after an evening of fancy performances and witchcraft.

While we’re obviously planning to do the same thing this weekend, we thought we would celebrate with Murphy, too. So we called her up. Here is what we learned about The Worst Witch’s past, and future:

Jill Murphy was Mildred Hubble.

Except she was really great at reading and writing – she was a publishing powerhouse at the age of three, creating her own newspapers. Despite this, Murphy wasn’t academically rounded: “I was tall and thin with black plaits and golden freckles and I couldn’t do anything”.

She wound up being taught at St Ursine's Convent in Wimbledon, which became the inspiration behind Miss Cackle’s Academy: “I was being taught by nuns in long black robes, and you couldn’t see anything except their faces. The school had lots of creepy corridors and we would be muttering about the teachers, something like, ‘we can’t stand Mother Joseph’, and she would suddenly appear behind you.”

. But it was her mum who inspired The Worst Witch

“A couple of friends came home to tea from the convent and my mum opened the door to us. We were all drenched with rain and killing ourselves laughing in exactly the same uniform as Mildred, and she said: ‘Look at you lot, you look like the three witches’. At the time,I was casting around to write a school story with a difference. And that was it: a school for witches.”

Murphy started writing The Worst Witch at 15

“I have the first drawing I did of her in my school rough book. It’s obviously drawn by quite a young person, but she looks very similar to how Mildred actually turned out when I was 18, when I wrote it properly.”

But Mildred wasn’t a witch at all in the beginning…

“She had pointy ears because she was in fact a fairy, and was originally in the wrong school – she should have gone to a fairy school. At the end of this story she starts to grow wings and has to wear a very tight vest to stop them showing. She flies out of the window to find the fairy school and has a wonderful time there.”

After that, Mildred was a secret

Murphy briefly attended Chelsea Art School, but she was “thrown out” because she “didn’t really like being there, and sort of fell to pieces really”. All the while, The Worst Witch was coming along, but “nobody knew I drew pictures at all. Nobody knew about The Worst Witch. I’d written it and never even showed it to anybody.”

The Worst Witch was only published because of a party

Murphy only had one copy of her Worst Witch manuscript which she sent to a few publishers. They turned it down, and luckily got it back. A friend typed out a copy, and while Murphy was away travelling in Ghana, he attended a publisher’s party: the publisher turned out to be Ghanian. Intrigued by the sound of Murphy and The Worst Witch, she called her the day after Murphy’s plane landed. “It was the most astonishing piece of luck, because without this it wouldn’t have done it. After I got the call I cycled from Chessington to Great Marlborough Street with the manuscript, and they said; ‘this is wonderful, just what we were looking for.”
